WEPRIN, BUTTENSCHON -- read once and referred to the Committee on Agriculture AN ACT to amend the agriculture and markets law, in relation to the recovery of a deceased dog or cat on public roads THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The agriculture and markets law is amended by adding a new section 377-b to read as follows: § 377-B. RECOVERY OF A DECEASED DOG OR CAT ON PUBLIC ROADS. ANY STATE OR MUNICIPAL OFFICIAL THAT RECOVERS THE BODY OF A DOG OR CAT KILLED ON A PUBLIC ROAD SHALL MAKE A REASONABLE EFFORT TO DETECT INDICIA OF OWNER- SHIP, SUCH AS TAGS, LICENSE NUMBERS, OR OTHER SUCH IDENTIFIERS ON OR ABOUT THE ANIMAL AND SHALL MAKE A REASONABLE EFFORT TO NOTIFY THE OWNER OR AN ANIMAL MANAGEMENT SERVICE CONCERNING THE ANIMAL'S DEATH. § 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred eightieth day after it shall have become a law. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted.
