2025-A5609 (ACTIVE) - Summary

Increases the maximum penalty for concealing a license plate to a fine of one thousand dollars when a license plate is covered or coated with any material or substance that conceals or obscures such license plate or distorts an image of such license plate, when a license plate is covered with glass or plastic material, or when the view of a license plate is obstructed by a part of the vehicle or anything carried thereon.

 AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation  to  increasing
   the  maximum  penalty  for concealing a license plate to a fine of one
   thousand dollars
 
   THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
 
   Section  1. Paragraph (a) of subdivision 8 of section 402 of the vehi-
 cle and traffic law, as amended by section 3 of subpart A of part WW  of
 chapter 56 of the laws of 2024, is amended to read as follows:
   (a)  A violation of subparagraph (ii), subparagraph (ii-a) or subpara-
 graph (iii) of paragraph (b) of subdivision one of this section shall be
 punishable by a fine of not less than one hundred nor  more  than  [five
 hundred] ONE THOUSAND dollars.
   § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of November next succeed-
 ing the date upon which it shall have become a law.
