Senate Resolution No. 251

COMMEMORATING the 195th Anniversary of the Town of
Diana, New York, in 2025
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 195th Anniversary of the Town of Diana, New York; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1830 from part of the Town of Watson, the
Town of Diana, located on the northeastern border of Lewis County and
northeast of Watertown, was named after the Roman goddess of the hunt,
Diana; part of Fort Drum Military Reservation is located in the
northwestern area of the Town; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 2,500 residents call the Town of Diana home;
the Town contains the Hamlet of Harrisville; additionally, Diana is
partially located in scenic Adirondack Park, and the Indian River, part
of the Oswegatchie River watershed, flows out of the western side of
Diana; and
WHEREAS, One notable individual, who spent part of his exile living
in the Town of Diana, was Joseph Bonaparte, the elder brother of
Napoleon; Lake Bonaparte, located in the northern part of the Town, was
named after him; and
WHEREAS, In 1995, the Alpina and Lewisburg Archeological Districts,
within the Town of Diana, were added to the National Register of
Historic Places; the Town of Diana Historical Museum, Frank E. Jadwin
Memorial State Forest, and Bonaparte's Cave State Forest are just a few
of the attractions in or near Diana; and
WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the Town of Diana continues to
provide the quintessential quality of life for its residents; and
WHEREAS, The residents of the Town of Diana have a bright outlook
for the future of their community which remains a beautiful place in
which to live, raise a family, conduct business, and enjoy the natural
beauty and historical sites that make this sector of New York State a
charming and welcoming community; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of Diana's rich history and enduring
contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is proud to
pay tribute to this spirited Town upon the occasion of its 195th
Anniversary; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 195th Anniversary of the Town of Diana, New York,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the communities of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Town of Diana.
