BILL NUMBER: S2511 SPONSOR: MAY TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to required training for school district officers SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1: Amends subdivision 1 of section 2102-a of the education law to implement regular training requirements for trustees or voting members of school boards in the state to cover the state's updating learning standards and any new or updated laws, rules, or regulations, and to remove the waiving of future trainings upon initial completion. MAY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to required training for school district officers THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Subdivision 1 of section 2102-a of the education law, as amended by chapter 388 of the laws of 2010, is amended to read as follows: 1. a. Every trustee or voting member of a board of education of a school district or a board of cooperative educational services, elected or appointed for a term beginning on or after July first, two thousand five, shall, within the first year of [his or her] SUCH TRUSTEE'S OR VOTING MEMBER'S term, complete a minimum of six hours of training on the financial oversight, accountability and fiduciary responsibilities of a school board member. b. In addition to the training required by paragraph a of this subdi- vision, every trustee or voting member of a board of education of a school district or a board of cooperative educational services, elected or appointed for a [first] term beginning on or after the first of July next succeeding the effective date of this paragraph, shall, within the first year of [his or her] SUCH TRUSTEE'S OR VOTING MEMBER'S term, complete a training course to acquaint [him or her] SUCH TRUSTEE OR VOTING MEMBER with the powers, functions and duties of boards of educa- tion, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, RESPONSIBILITY FOR ADOPTION OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS FOR COURSES OF STUDY REQUIRED UNDER THIS CHAPTER, AND RESPONSIBILITY FOR ADOPTION OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ALIGNED WITH ALL NEW YORK STATE LEARNING STAND- ARDS, as well as the powers and duties of other governing and adminis- trative authorities affecting public education.
