BILL NUMBER: S378 SPONSOR: BROUK TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to higher education fund- ing opportunities for foster youth PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: THIS LEGISLATION WILL FAMILIARIZE STUDENTS AND STAFF AT PUBLIC HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS WITH FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES THAT FOSTER YOUTH MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: SECTION 1 AMENDS THE EDUCATION LAW BY ADDING A NEW SUBDIVISION 22 TO SECTION 355, TO REQUIRE THE COMMISSIONER OF THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AND THE COMMISSIONER OF THE OFFICE OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES TO DISPLAY WRITTEN MATERIALS REGARDING AVAILABLE FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES AND ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR FOSTER YOUTH IN SUNY AND CUNY ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID OFFICES, AS WELL AS ON THE WEBSITES OF THE NEW YORK

BROUK, COONEY, JACKSON, WEBB -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Higher Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to higher education fund- ing opportunities for foster youth THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 355 of the education law is amended by adding a new subdivision 22 to read as follows: 22. THE COMMISSIONER, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE COMMISSIONER OF THE OFFICE OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES, SHALL CREATE AND DISPLAY IN A VISUALLY CONSPICUOUS MANNER POSTERS, PAMPHLETS, OR OTHER WRITTEN MATERI- ALS REGARDING STATE AND FEDERALLY OPERATED PROGRAMS THAT PROVIDE FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR FOSTER YOUTH AT THE HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS OF THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AND CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK, AS WELL AS THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCH PROGRAMS. SUCH INFORMATION SHALL BE DISPLAYED AT ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID OFFICES LOCATED ON THE PREMISES OF SUCH INSTITUTIONS, AS WELL AS ON SUCH INSTITUTIONS' WEBSITES, THE WEBSITE OF THE DEPARTMENT, AND THE WEBSITE OF THE OFFICE OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES. § 2.
