BILL NUMBER: S6645 SPONSOR: SANDERS TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to permitting students made homeless by an act of terrorism or natural disaster to attend school in the school district in which they resided prior to being home- less for two school years after the event PURPOSE: To permit students made homeless by an act of terrorism or natural disaster to attend the school district in which they resided for two school years after the event. SANDERS -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to permitting students made homeless by an act of terrorism or natural disaster to attend school in the school district in which they resided prior to being homeless for two school years after the event THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Subdivision 1 of section 3209 of the education law is amended by adding a new paragraph c-1 to read as follows: C-1. NOTWITHSTANDING ANY OTHER PROVISION OF LAW TO THE CONTRARY, WHERE A CHILD BECOMES HOMELESS AS A RESULT OF AN ACT OF TERRORISM OR A NATURAL DISASTER WHICH RESULTS IN THE DECLARATION OF A STATE OF EMERGENCY OR DISASTER BY THE STATE OR BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, SUCH CHILD MAY DESIGNATE AND CONTINUE TO BE ENROLLED IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF ORIGIN FOR UP TO TWO FULL SCHOOL YEARS AFTER THE ACT OF TERRORISM OR NATURAL DISASTER PROVIDED SUCH SCHOOL DISTRICT IS NOT OVERCROWDED. § 2.
