LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Michael and Stacy Behan for their brav-
ery and compassion at a car crash in Red Hook, New York on April 26,
2009
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
caring concern and heroic acts of those individuals who take prompt and
appropriate action in emergency situations, helping others to avert
life-threatening danger; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Michael and Stacy Behan for their bravery and compassion at a car crash
in Red Hook, New York on April 26, 2009; and
WHEREAS, A stay-at-home mom, Stacy Behan was awake and getting her son
a glass of water early Sunday morning, when she heard a screeching noise
and a loud thud from nearby Route 9G; and
WHEREAS, While her husband, Michael, called 911, Stacy Behan rushed
out the door and raced to an overturned Ford Taurus that was rapidly
becoming engulfed in flames; and
WHEREAS, Inside the car, Stacy Behan discovered an unconscious male
who was breathing heavily and still wearing his seatbelt; without any
thought for her own safety, she reached inside the car, unbuckled the
seatbelt and then pulled the much larger man out; and
WHEREAS, Officer Kevin Van Wagner arrived on the scene and helped
Michael Behan carry the victim a safe distance from the burning vehicle
as the fire was extinguished by members of the Tivoli Fire Department;
and
WHEREAS, Medical assistance was provided on scene by the Northern
Dutchess Paramedics; the victim was then transferred to a helicopter and
airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, where he was stabilized; and
WHEREAS, Through their spontaneous and heroic actions, Michael and
Stacy Behan demonstrated their character and compassion for the welfare
of others, personifying the collective concern of ordinary citizens
across the community of the State of New York who voluntarily respond
when others are in need of help; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
express its highest admiration for Michael and Stacy Behan and to wish
them continued success in all of their future endeavors; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Michael and Stacy Behan for their bravery and compassion at a car
crash in Red Hook, New York on April 26, 2009; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Michael and Stacy Behan.
