LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Rose Garden Bowl/Viking Valhalla
Restaurant upon the occasion of receiving the Business of the Year Award
from the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those businesses throughout the State of New York which have
substantially contributed to the economic vitality of their communities;
and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the Rose
Garden Bowl/Viking Valhalla Restaurant upon the occasion of receiving
the Business of the Year Award from the Genesee County Chamber of
Commerce, to be celebrated at its Awards Dinner on Saturday, March 6,
2010, in Batavia, New York; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this special event is to also celebrate the
Chamber's 38th Annual Awards Ceremony at the Batavia Holiday Inn; the
theme is "Simply Elegant"; and
WHEREAS, Doc and Mary Sardou purchased the Rose Garden in 1954 and
three years later, added an eight-lane bowling center; the restaurant
was remodeled in 1966 to reflect "Viking" atmosphere, complete with
weapons and a Viking ship; and
WHEREAS, Doc Sardou passed away in 1967 and Tom, then age 13, took
full responsibility in filling his father's shoes by assisting his moth-
er, Mary, to run the family business; Tom cooked dinners, ran the bowl-
ing leagues and learned to fix bowling machines; younger brother George,
at age 10, helped by bussing tables, washing dishes and at an older age
did some short order cooking and bartending; and
WHEREAS, An historic icon, the Rose Garden Bowl/Viking Valhalla
Restaurant has expanded from bowling, dining and full bar, to offering
summer outdoor beach volleyball; it continues to be an excellent fami-
ly-owned and operated business with Mary, Tom, and Chris Sardou leading
the way; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Rose Garden Bowl/Viking Valhalla Restaurant upon the occasion
of its designation as recipient of the Business of the Year Award by the
Genesee County Chamber of Commerce; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Sardou Family.
