LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Owasco Watershed Lake Association
upon the occasion of its 25th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those organizations in our community that add to the quality
of life for all our residents and to recognize the contributions such
organizations make to our society; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor
the Owasco Watershed Lake Association upon the occasion of its 25th
Anniversary and to recognize the important role it plays in the communi-
ty; and
WHEREAS, The Owasco Watershed Lake Association is a not-for-profit,
citizen-based corporation devoted to protecting and improving Owasco
Lake as a valuable water resource; and
WHEREAS, Owasco Lake is the sixth largest and third easternmost of the
Finger Lakes of New York in the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, Owasco Lake provides the residents of Cayuga County and its
surrounding communities with drinking water, recreation, and wildlife
habitat; and
WHEREAS, Protecting Owasco Lake is essential to the maintenance of the
Upstate New York community and to the improvement of its economic
future; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of this, the Owasco Watershed Lake Association
draws community attention to the value and importance of Owasco Lake;
and
WHEREAS, Founded to educate the public on environmental management,
preservation, wise use, and appreciation of Owasco Lake and its
watershed, the Owasco Watershed Lake Association promotes cooperation
and leadership in the comprehensive management of land use, water quali-
ty, recreation, agriculture and a host of other issues pertaining to
Owasco Lake; and
WHEREAS, The Owasco Watershed Lake Association focuses on improving
the water quality of the Owasco Lake watershed and encourages residents
and lake users to become involved in protecting Owasco Lake; and
WHEREAS, Membership in the Owasco Watershed Lake Association is open
to all community members interested in the quality of Owasco Lake; and
WHEREAS, Members of the Owasco Watershed Lake Association monitor the
waters of Owasco Lake and its tributaries; and
WHEREAS, The Owasco Watershed Lake Association acts as an informa-
tional and environmental action center for matters concerning Owasco
Lake and its watershed, in conjunction with individuals, other organiza-
tions, and all levels of government; and
WHEREAS, The leadership of the Owasco Watershed Lake Association has
supported the wise use of land and water, and controlled levels of
pollution; and
WHEREAS, To control pollution, the Owasco Watershed Lake Association
responds to citizen complaints of water pollution and works to see these
problems resolved; and
WHEREAS, By identifying environmentally critical areas of the
watershed, the Owasco Watershed Lake Association is able to adequately
protect these areas; and
WHEREAS, The Owasco Watershed Lake Association unifies, improves, and
implements planning policies that measurably improve water quality in
Owasco Lake and its tributary streams; and
WHEREAS, In cooperation with the local farming community, the Owasco
Watershed Lake Association has significantly accelerated measurable

reduction in nutrient loading, helped set goals, monitored successes,
and facilitated better communication with local farmers; and
WHEREAS, The Owasco Watershed Lake Association encourages the wise
management of fish and game, good forestry practices, safe operation of
boats, proper maintenance of navigation aids and of the lake's water
levels, and observance of laws and regulations by individuals; and
WHEREAS, A major goal of the Owasco Watershed Lake Association is to
foster and promote public interest and understanding of environmental
issues impacting Owasco Lake and its watershed; and
WHEREAS, To further this goal, the Owasco Watershed Lake Association
annually sponsors "Owasco Lake Day," providing a resource fair, family
activities, and speakers at Emerson Park, located on the Northern end of
Owasco Lake to the community; and
WHEREAS, 2013 marks the 25th year the Owasco Watershed Lake Associ-
ation has effectively and continuously furthered the environmental
management and preservation of Owasco Lake and its watershed; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Owasco Watershed Lake Associ-
ation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Charlie Greene, President of the Board of Directors, Owasco
Watershed Lake Association, Inc.
