LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Cassidy Lucas upon the occasion of being
recognized as the 2013 National Medalist in the 90th annual Scholastic
Arts and Writing Awards

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, to honor the achievements of its young
citizens and leaders of tomorrow, whose character and accomplishments
exemplify the ideals and values cherished by this great State and
nation; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Cassidy Lucas
upon the occasion of being recognized as the 2013 National Medalist in
the 90th annual Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards, celebrated at the
National Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 31, 2013, at Carnegie Hall, New
York City; and
WHEREAS, Academically and artistically, Cassidy Lucas has distin-
guished herself as a young woman of superlative ability, talent, and
maturity, establishing standards of excellence and achievement, purpose-
fulness of life, and responsibility rarely achieved in youthful years;
and
WHEREAS, The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have an impressive
legacy, dating back to 1923, and are the largest source of recognition,
publication, and scholarships for creative teens in the United States;
and
WHEREAS, Cassidy Lucas, an eighth grade Advanced Art student at the
C.J. Hooker Middle School, received a silver medal in the mixed media
category for her work, "Rainbow Scarf", a piece she painted on silk; and
WHEREAS, Recognized by panels of creative professionals, Cassidy Lucas
is one of the most talented young artists in the nation; this year,
230,000 works of art were submitted, and only the top one percent were
recognized at a national level; and
WHEREAS, An outstanding role model for her classmates, Cassidy Lucas
has brought honor to her family, school, and community; and
WHEREAS, Cassidy Lucas may stand with pride in her achievements, expe-
riencing the satisfaction of her labors and the joy of her accomplish-
ments, eager to face the challenge of new experiences as she continues
her education; and
WHEREAS, Cassidy Lucas represents the potential inherent in our most
precious resource, our youth; this Legislative Body is pleased to honor
this young woman, recognizing her achievements and the promise of her
future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Cassidy Lucas upon the occasion of being recognized as the 2013
National Medalist in the 90th annual Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Cassidy Lucas.
