LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Sarah Jones upon the occasion of
her designation as the winner of the Salute to Freedom Essay Contest by
the National World War II Museum

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those youth
of today and leaders of tomorrow whose character and accomplishments
best exemplify the ideals and values cherished by this great State and
Nation; and
WHEREAS, It is also the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
the dedication and commitment of our young people who, by distinguishing
themselves through excellence in scholastic competition, have inspired
and brought pride to our majestic Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Sarah Jones upon the occasion of her designation as the winner of
the Salute to Freedom Essay Contest by the National World War II Museum;
and
WHEREAS, An outstanding role model for her classmates, Sarah Jones has
brought honor to her family, school, and community; and
WHEREAS, Sarah Jones, a Guilderland High School student, was one of 51
students selected nationally for this esteemed award; her passion for
history helped her become one of the students chosen from each state and
the District of Columbia to receive a trip to New Orleans in January,
for the opening of the National World War II Museum's United States
Freedom Pavilion; and
WHEREAS, This exemplary young woman was already researching World War
II as part of the National History Day program where students were to
create an essay, exhibit, website, or video; Sarah credits her teacher,
Deb Escobar, for encouraging her to enter the Salute to Freedom essay
contest; and
WHEREAS, The contest called for students to write two essays; one
describing how their state was affected by World War II, and the other
explaining how their participation in National History Day influenced
their perception of the past and future; and
WHEREAS, This summer and fall Sarah Jones will continue her studies on
the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, New York, as well as the
Watervliet Arsenal during World War II; she must write a 750-word paper,
and find six images with captions, to be incorporated into a special
exhibit at the grand opening of the pavilion; and
WHEREAS, Sarah Jones is a great example of a student who recognizes
the important lessons of World War II, why it was fought, how it was
won, and how it continues to have an impact on the world today; and
WHEREAS, Sarah Jones represents the potential inherent in our most
precious resource, our youth; this Legislative Body is pleased to honor
this young woman, recognizing her achievements and the promise of her
future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Sarah Jones upon the occasion of her designation as the
winner of the Salute to Freedom Essay Contest by the National World War
II Museum; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sarah Jones.
