LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Steven Goodman for his dedicated
service to New York State as the Executive Vice President and CEO of the
Samuel Field YM & YWHA
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge signif-
icant milestones in the distinguished lives and careers of esteemed
residents of this Empire State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Steven
Goodman for his dedicated service to New York State as the Executive
Vice President and CEO of the Samuel Field YM & YWHA, a position he has
held with distinction since 1995; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Goodman's legacy of excellence in leadership and educa-
tion started when he was just 16 years old and began working at the Y as
a day camp counselor; rising through the ranks, he was instrumental in
building the organization he loved into one of exemplary service to the
community; and
WHEREAS, The Samuel Field Y, known as "The Everybody Place," is a
non-profit, multi-service agency which has grown to include flagship
sites in Little Neck, Bayside, Forest Hills, and 33 additional sites
throughout the community that provide a diverse array of programs and
services to over 35,000 people; and
WHEREAS, Steve Goodman embodies the core element of the Y's mission -
enhancing the quality of individual, family and communal life through
service to people of all ages, ability levels, stages of life and back-
grounds; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure as leader of the Samuel Field Y, the organ-
ization's budget tripled and the agency started many new programs not
available through other agencies to include seniors, people with
Alzheimer's, and children with autism and developmental disabilities;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Goodman grew up in Flushing, graduated from Queens
College and is a holder of a doctorate degree in Educational Adminis-
tration and Research from Columbia University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Goodman has dedicated his life to serving people as a
Program Development Consultant for the New York City Board of Education,
a member of the Chancellor's Task Force for Model Schools of Excellence
Program, a member of the New York State Board of Regents Task Force for
More Effective Schools, a teacher at UJA-Federation's Wiener Center, a
member of the Executive Committee of the New York Region of Jewish
Center Professionals, a member of the Youth Services committees of
Queens Community Boards 7 and 11, and as President of Temple Sinai in
Roslyn; and
WHEREAS, Steve Goodman has been honored for excellence in education by
receiving the Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America Award; Educator
of the Year, Community District 5; the Chancellor's Citation for Educa-
tion Innovation from the New York City Board of Education; the Distin-
guished Service Award from the Samuel Field YM & YWHA; and the Meritori-
ous Service Award from the National Education Association; and
WHEREAS, After a career of service to the Queens community, Dr. Steve
Goodman is retiring from his leadership role at the Samuel Field Y but
has accepted a position as a special consultant and will help the agency
continue its legacy of excellence; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Goodman will use his retirement to spend more time with
his wife, Sherry; daughter, Rebecca; son, Seth; and grandson, Jack; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Steven Goodman for his dedicated service to New York State as
the Executive Vice President and CEO of the Samuel Field YM & YWHA; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Steven Goodman, and to the Samuel Field YM & YWHA.
