LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending NewsChannel 9 Anchor Rod Wood for his
50 years of broadcasting excellence in the Central New York community
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
dedicated and distinguished individuals within our midst whose profes-
sional lives, civic endeavors and personal achievements are an inspira-
tion to their family, friends and colleagues; one such individual is
NewsChannel 9 Anchor Rod Wood; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
NewsChannel 9 Anchor Rod Wood for 50 years of broadcasting excellence in
the Central New York community; and
WHEREAS, Rod Wood, a Syracuse native, graduated from Nottingham High
School in 1960; he then served his country as a member of the 504th
Military Police Battalion, United States Army, during the Berlin Wall
and Cuban Missile Crises; and
WHEREAS, Upon his discharge in 1963, Rod Wood began to pursue his
passion for broadcast news and accepted a position at WOLF Radio in
Syracuse; the hard work and talent he displayed at WOLF drew the inter-
est of WNDR Radio, and just one year later, he started working as an
anchor on WNDR Radio; and
WHEREAS, In 1967, Rod Wood moved from WNDR to WHEN Radio, where he
became the station's morning news anchor and then the station's news
director in 1974; furthermore, he began anchoring the news at WHEN-TV;
and
WHEREAS, In 1976, after a 10-year career at WHEN-TV and Radio, Rod
Wood joined the team of (WSYR-TV) NewsChannel 9, which was then called
WIXT-TV; and
WHEREAS, Since then, Rod Wood has remained a trusted news source in
the community, ensuring accuracy and connecting with viewers from the
state-of-the-art studios of NewsChannel 9; he has been called the "dean"
of local broadcasting journalists; and
WHEREAS, Currently, Rod Wood anchors NewsChannel 9 at 5:00, 5:30,
6:00, and Eleven at 11:00; he also provides Central New York shoppers
with helpful daily Consumer Reports; and
WHEREAS, For his outstanding work, Rod Wood has received countless
awards from the Associated Press and various other professional news
organizations; and
WHEREAS, Rod Wood was inducted into the 2011 New York State Associ-
ation of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and was elected to the Syracuse
Press Club Wall of Fame in 2001, located in the Onondaga County Civic
Center; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his extensive and distinguished broadcasting
career, Rod Wood has remained an active community volunteer, lending his
time to various local charities and serving as a mentor to other local
journalists; and
WHEREAS, In addition to the constant support of his friends and
colleagues, Rod Wood has been blessed with a wonderful family, including
his wife, Nanette, and five grown children, as well as seven grandchil-
dren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice
in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Rod Wood for 50 years of broadcasting excellence in the Central
New York community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Rod Wood.
