LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Gladys Walker upon the occasion of her
retirement after 39 years of distinguished service to the Sullivan Coun-
ty Community Action Commission to Help the Economy

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Gladys Walker upon the occasion of her retirement after 39 years of
distinguished service to the Sullivan County Community Action Commission
to Help the Economy; and
WHEREAS, For almost four decades, Gladys Walker rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to the Sullivan County Community
Action Commission to Help the Economy (CACHE), earning the admiration,
esteem and affection of her colleagues; and
WHEREAS, Gladys Walker began working for CACHE in 1974 as a clerk and
has worked in several different capacities ranging from Case Worker to
Board Member; she will retire from the esteemed position of Executive
Director; and
WHEREAS, A true advocate for the poor, Gladys Walker has worked tire-
lessly to offer battered women and men support, as well as a safe place
to stay; during her time with the organization, CACHE created a domestic
violence program, the food pantry expanded to serve thousands, and a
thrift shop was established; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Gladys Walker worked as a parent aide in an
effort to mediate family disputes and keep children out of the foster
care system; parenting classes were offered, and a 24-hour hotline and
domestic violence education and prevention services were later estab-
lished; and
WHEREAS, Gladys Walker has received countless regional awards and
accolades for her leadership and advocacy within Sullivan County, and
this month, Community Unity named her one of its Community Heroes; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, upon her retirement, a room at CACHE will be
renamed The Gladys Walker Resource and Conference Center in her honor;
and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the occurrence of such a compassionate blend-
ing of strength, leadership, intellect, and commitment as that demon-
strated by Gladys Walker over a lifetime of sacrifice and dedication to
others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Gladys Walker upon the occasion of her retirement after 39 years
of distinguished service, and to wish her well in all her future endeav-
ors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Gladys Walker.
