LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Roger
Fay Williston Park Pool, and honoring former Williston Park Mayor, Roger
Fay

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of the Roger Fay Williston Park Pool, and to
honor the public servant responsible for its creation, former Williston
Park Mayor Roger Fay; this joyous occasion was celebrated on Saturday,
August 10, 2013; and
WHEREAS, The availability of exceptional local recreational facilities
does more than provide opportunities for sport and amusement; it also
contributes to the feeling of community spirit, vitality, and care so
essential to societal well-being and development; and
WHEREAS, The Roger Fay Williston Park Pool has, for 50 years, been an
important part of community life in the Village of Williston Park,
providing not only a well-maintained swimming pool and bathhouse, but
also a site for many Village events, including an annual Miss Williston
Park pageant and synchronized swimming team performances, pie eating
contests and other festivities; and
WHEREAS, Former Williston Park Mayor Roger Fay, who served as mayor
from 1960 to 1968, got the idea for a municipal swimming pool when two
teenage girls complained to him that they were being shut out of playing
on the ball fields of a local park in the summer of 1961; and
WHEREAS, An exemplar of public service and responsiveness, in February
1962, Mayor Roger Fay appointed a five-person recreation committee to
make proposals for the use of available Village land, with the idea of a
swimming pool in mind; the committee unanimously favored building a
pool; and
WHEREAS, The swimming pool opened on July 4, 1963, and was named in
Roger Fay's honor in 2006; and
WHEREAS, 1963 also saw the construction of Williston Park's Village
Hall, the Williston Park Fire Headquarters, and the village water works,
all monuments to Roger Fay's leadership and commitment; and
WHEREAS, Now 96 years old, former Williston Park Mayor Roger Fay may
look back with just pride on his accomplishments; he remains a singular
asset to all of the citizens he has served in the community of the State
of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to recognize and
applaud the presence of exceptional recreational facilities such as the
Roger Fay Williston Park Pool, which bring the community and its resi-
dents together in a spirit of unity and enjoyment, and to commend those
civic-minded individuals who make meeting the needs of their neighbors
and community their responsibility; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Roger Fay Williston Park Pool,
and to honor former Williston Park Mayor Roger Fay; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Village of Williston Park, and former Mayor Roger Fay.
