LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Ukrai-
nian Federal Credit Union, on October 19, 2013
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality and
character of life in this great Empire State are indelibly enriched by
the faithful efforts of those financial institutions that devote their
purpose to serving the public and promoting economic vitality; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 60th Anniversary of the Ukrainian Federal Credit Union, to be
celebrated on Saturday, October 19, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency Roches-
ter, in Rochester, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Ukrainian Federal Credit Union was established in 1953 in
Rochester, New York, one of the first American cities in which a strong
Ukrainian community emerged; and
WHEREAS, Created as the Rochester Ukrainian Federal Credit Union,
eight visionary founders signed the federal charter that inaugurated the
outstanding tenure of this fine institution: William Andrushin, Presi-
dent and Chairman of the Board of Directors; Walter Hawrylak, Manager;
William Kuchmy; Wasyl Ewanciw; Aleksander Papa; Illya Demydenko; John
Swereda and Gregory Dmytriv; and
WHEREAS, The Rochester Ukrainian Federal Credit Union began with 28
charter members; by 1955, it had 200 members and had already begun its
pivotal role in providing financial support for member and community
development, giving loans for large purchases, financing for homes and
automobiles, and funds for such local initiatives as a Ukrainian radio
program, schools, churches and civic organizations; and
WHEREAS, The Rochester Federal Credit Union enjoyed tremendous success
over the ensuing decades, a testament to the hard work, ambition and
dedication of its committed leadership; this esteemed financial institu-
tion grew in membership and assets, created new tools for enhanced
communication with its members and the broader community, and purchased
a new facility to serve as its headquarters; and
WHEREAS, In 2001, the Rochester Federal Credit Union expanded, opening
the doors of its Capital District branch in Watervliet, New York, and
later reaching across the country to open a branch in Sacramento, Cali-
fornia; and
WHEREAS, It became the Ukrainian Federal Credit Union in 2003, as a
reflection of its remarkable national scope and emergence as a multi-
branch credit union; successful mergers with Selfreliance Syracuse
Federal Credit Union in 2004, and the Ukrainian Fraternal Federal Credit
Union in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2005, further grew this intrepid
organization's membership to 15,000, and dramatically increased its
assets; and
WHEREAS, Today the Ukrainian Federal Credit Union has seven branches
nationwide, and serves more than 18,000 members; it may take just pride
in its success, having been ranked in the Top Ten of New York State
credit unions in the New York Credit Union Performance & Trends report
issued by the Credit Union Association of New York and Callahan & Asso-
ciates; and
WHEREAS, Credit unions play a significant role in communities across
the great State of New York, helping to grow the economy, and providing
critical funds to families and businesses in the communities they serve;
and
WHEREAS, For 60 years, the Ukrainian Federal Credit Union has helped
people of modest means reach their financial goals; as a member-owned,
not-for-profit financial cooperative, it remains fully committed to its
members; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when insti-
tutions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Ukrainian Federal Credit Union,
fully confident that it will continue to enjoy the sparkling success it
has experienced thus far; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Ukrainian Federal Credit Union.
