LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim February 5, 2014 as New York State Girls and Women in Sports
Day
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize official
days that are set aside to celebrate the participation of women and
girls in sports and athletics; and
WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved
only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to memorial-
ize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim February 5, 2014 as New York
State Girls and Women in Sports Day; and
WHEREAS, National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) is a special
day for girls and women to celebrate their participation in sports and
athletics; when Title IX was enacted in 1971, only one in 27 girls in
high school participated in athletics; today, one in three girls partic-
ipate in athletics in high school; and
WHEREAS, There has been an enormous increase in the number of athletic
opportunities open to women and girls of all ages and levels of ability;
with the addition of women's boxing, the 2012 London Olympics became the
first ever to have women competing in all of the same sports as men for
a total of 302 medal events; and
WHEREAS, In addition, more female athletes than male athletes were
sent by the United States to the London Olympics; and
WHEREAS, The theme for the 2014 National Girls and Women in Sports Day
is Passing the Torch, Blazing the Trail; NGWSD presents a prime opportu-
nity to communicate to others what Title IX has accomplished and how
many girls and women it truly helps; and
WHEREAS, Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride and
accomplishment, and the outstanding girls and women in athletics across
this great Empire State have clearly made a contribution to the spirit
of excellence which is their tradition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberation to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim February 5, 2014 as New
York State Girls and Women in Sports Day; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State
of New York.
