LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Gale Stevens Haynes, Esq. upon the
occasion of being honored in conjunction with Women's History Month 2014
in the State of New York
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those women of achievement within the Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and who inspire others
through their model citizenship; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Gale Stevens Haynes, Esq. upon the occasion of being honored in conjunc-
tion with Women's History Month 2014 in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Women of every race, class, and ethnic background have made
invaluable contributions to the growth and strength of New York State in
countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and
WHEREAS, Each year, the State of New York officially sets aside time
to recognize the achievements and lives of such exemplary women, repre-
sentatives of the wide-ranging and vital roles women have played in the
historic development of this great Empire State and its communities; the
theme of this year's commemoration is "Celebrating Women of Character,
Courage, and Commitment"; and
WHEREAS, Gale Stevens Haynes, Esq. is a higher education leader and
administrator dedicated to fostering a vibrant academic environment that
encourages free thought, views cultural diversity as valuable and
enriching, and is engaged with its larger community; throughout her
illustrious three decade career, she has consistently epitomized the
values of character, courage, and commitment in her unwavering service
to her peers, colleagues, and fellow citizens; and
WHEREAS, Gale Stevens Haynes is the Vice President, Chief Operating
Officer and Legal Counsel of Long Island University (LIU), and LIU
Brooklyn Provost; and
WHEREAS, Under her luminous leadership, LIU Brooklyn has much to be
proud of; it is one of the most diverse college campuses in the United
States, with more than 11,000 students from across the nation and the
globe, it has doubled student enrollment, and in 2006, it completed the
largest building project in the college's history, the 114,000 square
foot Steinberg Wellness Center, which supports the campus' 18 Division I
athletic teams, provides a state-of-the-art workout environment for the
campus community, and offers a broad array of health and wellness
services, and health-related counseling programs to students, faculty
members, staff, and members of the community; and
WHEREAS, Gale Stevens Haynes' commitment to the community of Long
Island University is long-standing; she earned both a bachelor's degree
in English, and a master's degree in Counseling from LIU, and began her
career at the college as director of the campus' Higher Education Oppor-
tunity Program; and
WHEREAS, After completing her law degree at St. John's University in
1983, Gale Stevens Haynes became LIU's legal counsel; she assumed the
position of Provost in 1989, and as a result of her outstanding leader-
ship and accomplishments, was named Chief Operations Officer for the
entire University in July 2013; and
WHEREAS, The depth of Gayle Stevens Haynes' commitment to the growth,
achievement and well-being of others is evident in her significant civic
and volunteer work; she served as the chairwoman of the board of educa-
tion for the Roosevelt Union Free School District in Nassau County from
2007 to 2010, was named to the board of directors for the Brooklyn
Hospital Center in 2008, serves as Trustee of the 651 Arts Board, and is
a member of the board of directors for the Downtown Brooklyn Partner-
ship; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her service to her community
and the State of New York, Gale Stevens Haynes has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
express its highest admiration for Gale Stevens Haynes and to wish her
continued success in all of her future endeavors; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Gale Stevens Haynes, Esq. upon the occasion of being honored in
conjunction with Women's History Month in the State of New York; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Gale Stevens Haynes, Esq.
