LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Sam Steirman upon the occasion of his
receiving the Community Hero Award from the Hickok Center for Brain
Injury on March 23, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to join in celebration
with those individuals who have received extraordinary honors from their
community, highlighting their incredible accomplishments and life
stories; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with long-
standing tradition, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Sam
Steirman as he receives the 2014 Community Hero Award from the Hickok
Center for Brain Injury at their Fifth Annual "Brain Waves" benefit for
survivors of brain injuries; and
WHEREAS, Sam Steirman is a 22-year veteran of the United States Army,
having fought to preserve our way of life, defend innocent people and
bring security to our world through tours of duty in Macedonia, Kosovo,
Korea, Germany and Iraq; and
WHEREAS, While on active duty in Iraq as part of Operation New Dawn,
Sam Steirman suffered a traumatic brain injury; and
WHEREAS, Since returning to the United States, Sam Steirman has gradu-
ated from CDS Monarch's "Warrior Salute" program, and as part of his
transition to civilian life is enrolled at Monroe Community College
studying social work; and
WHEREAS, After completing the "Warrior Salute" program, Sam Steirman
immediately became involved as an advocate assisting new individuals
entering the program, using his own experiences to help other returning
veterans, and has also begun to volunteer with local youth; and
WHEREAS, Through his long military career and his ongoing work as a
mentor and volunteer, Sam Steirman stands as a shining example of
putting service above self and the safety of his community above his
own; and
WHEREAS, We honor Sam Steirman not only for his incredible story, but
also as a representative of the many Americans who have given so much to
our country, both as members of our military and as community volun-
teers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Sam Steirman upon the occasion of his receiving the Community Hero
Award from the Hickok Center for Brain Injury on March 23, 2014; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sam Steirman.
