LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Peter F. Sipperley for his distinguished
service to his community
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those individuals who have given of themselves in support of the
good works and worthy accomplishments of individuals dedicated to
fellowship and service to the community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Peter F. Sipperley for his distinguished service to his local community,
the State of New York, and the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, He was born on June 8, 1936, to Carlton Goodell Sipperley and
Marion Elizabeth Weckesser, graduating from Rhinebeck High School in the
Class of 1953; and
WHEREAS, He became organist at the Church of St. John the Evangelist
on October 15, 1956, and has served consistently except when he was
serving his country in Korea; and
WHEREAS, Peter F. Sipperley entered the United States Army basic
training at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, in June of 1959, where he
learned how to handle intense heat, developed both a trademark "flattop"
haircut and organizational skills which landed him the post of Company
Clerk; and
WHEREAS, He returned to Dutchess County after serving in Korea, and
resumed his position in the family plumbing business he ran with his
brother Vernon and their Uncle Pete; and
WHEREAS, He was elected a trustee of the Village of Rhinebeck in March
of 1967, before being elected Mayor of Rhinebeck in 1969, and went on to
serve 14 terms in this capacity; and
WHEREAS, On July 6, 1968, Peter F. Sipperley married Lori Larson in
Paoli, Pennsylvania; together they enjoyed a loving marriage which last-
ed 41 years until her passing in 2010; and
WHEREAS, Peter F. Sipperley has been a trustee of the Church of St.
John the Evangelist in Barrytown, New York, since 1971, and has served
as President of the Board of Trustees since 1973; and
WHEREAS, In 1997, Peter F. Sipperley was appointed by Mayor John Costa
to the post of Street Foreman for the Village of Rhinebeck, serving in
this position until his retirement in 2006; and
WHEREAS, In retirement, Peter Sipperley served as American Legion Post
429 Commander from 2005-2011, and has continued to serve as Legion
Chaplain as well as Historian; and
WHEREAS, Peter F. Sipperley was recently appointed by Governor Andrew
M. Cuomo to serve as a Board Member of the Black Car Insurance Fund;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Peter F. Sipperley for his distinguished service to his community;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Peter F. Sipperley.
