LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Calvary Girl Scouts Program upon
the occasion of its celebration of 100 years of Girl Scouting in Greater
New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those organizations that are devoted to instilling in youth
the values of community service and civic responsibility; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Calvary Girl Scouts Program upon the occasion of its celebration of
100 years of Girl Scouting in Greater New York; this remarkable mile-
stone will be celebrated with a Banquet on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at
Calvary Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Calvary Baptist Church has been participating in Girl Scouts
of USA for 54 years; the Calvary Girl Scout Program began in 1960 with
Brownie Troop 4-890 and, within twenty years, it had expanded to house
four additional levels of Scouting: Junior, Cadette, Senior, and Pixie;
and
WHEREAS, The ultimate achievement for girls in the Calvary Girl Scout
Program is to become a "First Class Girl Scout"; opportunities abound
for each girl to attain this goal as the Scouts visit the sick and shut-
in, enjoy camping activities with survival classes, sponsor senior citi-
zen luncheons, plan cultural trips, serve as library and museum aides,
offer home hospitality for out-of-state girls, and assist the church
during special events, projects, and whenever called upon to serve; and
WHEREAS, The Calvary Girl Scout Program today has 20 Girl Scouts, and
the six dedicated adults who serve as its troop leaders: Joann Cummings,
Melonie Vanderpool-Wyatt, Tanya Chambers, Shantell Lewis, Yaneke Duncan
and Geronda Porterfield, carry on the tradition of their forebears in
sharing a common goal, which is to help develop strong, honest citizens
of tomorrow while encouraging the girls to live up to their promise to
"serve God, their Country, and Mankind"; and
WHEREAS, The Calvary Girl Scout Program is proud to be part of Girl
Scouts of Greater New York as it celebrates 100 years, and part of the
larger Girl Scouts of the USA movement, in which 3.2 million girls and
adult members actively celebrate timeless values, courage, confidence,
and character, in a way that has real impact on communities; and
WHEREAS, Thousands of girls ages 8 to 14 earn their Girl Scout Bronze
and Silver Award for improving their community through service and, each
year, a very special set of teen Girl Scouts pursue the Girl Scout Gold
Award, the leadership development project requiring at least 70 hours of
community service, after completing a rigorous ladder of preparation
steps; and
WHEREAS, More than 59 million women in the United States today are
Girl Scout alumnae; former Girl Scouts represent 80% of all women busi-
ness owners in this country, 69% of women United States senators, 67% of
women members of the House of Representatives and 93% of women astro-
nauts who have been in space; and
WHEREAS, Truly the Calvary Girl Scouts Program, in so assiduously
cultivating the values of leadership, community service, sisterhood and
excellence in our State's young people, merits the admiration and appre-
ciation of the people of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Calvary Girl Scouts Program upon the occasion of its cele-
bration of 100 years of Girl Scouting in Greater New York; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Calvary Girl Scouts Program, Calvary Baptist Church.
