LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Char-
lotte-Genesee Lighthouse's designation as a City of Rochester Landmark
and listing on the National Register of Historic Places on March 29,
2014
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the preser-
vation of historical landmarks that served to enhance the growth of this
great State, ensuring that the complete history of our State and Nation
is shared with present generations of citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 40th Anniversary of the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse's desig-
nation as a City of Rochester Landmark and listing on the National
Register of Historic Places on March 29, 2014, to be celebrated at a
Gala Anniversary Luncheon on March 29, 2014, at the Rochester Yacht Club
in Rochester, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse was constructed in 1822, on
a hill just west of the Genesee River and south of the majestic shores
of Lake Ontario; its construction consisted of a 40 foot tower and a
two-room house for the keeper, all built from stone; the tower's 10
Argand lamps were equipped with whale oil for fuel; and
WHEREAS, In 1853, the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse was modernized by
the installation of a fourth order Fresnel lens, and its wooden tower
stairs were replaced by cast iron steps; the present keeper's house was
built to replace the two-room original structure in 1863; and
WHEREAS, This important nautical installation steadfastly guided boats
on Lake Ontario to safety throughout its many years of service, until
its deactivation in the December, 1881; and
WHEREAS, To celebrate the lighthouse's distinguished service, the
Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society, together with the Coun-
ty of Monroe, opened a museum on the site in 1984; and
WHEREAS, The Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society is an
all-volunteer, privately funded, non-profit organization under the lead-
ership of President, Robert Owens, Jr.; members of the society are dedi-
cated to educating the public and preserving this great landmark for
future generations; and
WHEREAS, Today, this historic treasure is the oldest surviving light-
house on Lake Ontario and serves as a constant reminder of the outstand-
ing heritage of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse's
designation as a City of Rochester Landmark and listing on the National
Register of Historic Places on March 29, 2014; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Robert Owens, Jr., President, Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse
Historical Society.
