LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating longtime Head Coach Ed Zarowin for
special recognition as he begins his 30th season coaching Hunter
College's Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of those outstanding
coaches, whose dedication and achievements have been instrumental in
developing character and athletic excellence in the young people of New
York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late longtime Head Coach Ed Zarowin for special recognition as he begins
his 30th season coaching Hunter College's Men's and Women's Cross Coun-
try Teams; this milestone will be celebrated on Saturday, April 5, 2014,
at Hunter College; and
WHEREAS, The athletic talent displayed by Hunter College's Men's and
Women's Cross Country and Track and Field Teams is due in great part to
the efforts of Coach Ed Zarowin, a skilled and inspirational mentor,
respected for his ability to develop potential into excellence; and
WHEREAS, A 1996 inductee into the Hunter Athletic Hall of Fame, Coach
Ed Zarowin, more affectionately known as "Coach Z", has guided student-
athletes to all levels of success, including three individual NCAA Divi-
sion III National Championships, 23 All-Americans, and 45 CUNY Athletic
Conference Championships in Cross Country and Track and Field combined;
and
WHEREAS, Since the inception of the CUNY Athletic Conference Cross
Country Championship in 1989, the Hunter Hawks, under Coach Ed Zarowin,
have won 15 men's and 11 women's championships, while 14 men and 13
women have been crowned as the individual race winners; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, in track and field, the men's indoor and outdoor
teams have combine for 12 CUNYAC titles, while the women have combine
for seven, since its inception in 1996; and
WHEREAS, Coach Ed Zarowin, a resident of Marine Park in Brooklyn, New
York, is a 33 time CUNYAC Coach of the Year; he guided the men to
conference triple crown honors in 1995 to 1996, 1996 to 1997, and 2002
to 2003, while the women achieved the same trifecta, first in 1997 to
1998, and then again in 2003 to 2004; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous direction of Coach Ed Zarowin, along with
the numerous All-American student-athlete titles, athletes have quali-
fied for national an additional 15 times; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of New York University, Coach Ed Zarowin earned a
Bachelor of Science degree in Education, which would lead him to an
Assistant Principal position at Brooklyn Tech High School for 33 years;
and
WHEREAS, During his tenure at Brooklyn Tech, Coach Ed Zarowin spent 22
years as the Head Coach of both the Cross Country and Track and Field
Teams, leading several of those teams to top rankings in the nation; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Mary, and their two
sons, Paul and Louis, as well as three grandchildren, Diana, Joseph and
David, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice
in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Coaches provide a tremendous service to the future of our
State and Nation, inspiring generations of young people in their athlet-
ic journeys and ensuring their success in their future years; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate longtime Head Coach Ed Zarowin for special recognition as
he begins his 30th season coaching Hunter College's Men's and Women's
Cross Country Teams; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Head Coach Ed Zarowin.
