LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of 90 Miles
Off Broadway

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to call attention to
individuals and organizations that devote their time and energies to the
cultural enrichment of the Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of 90 Miles Off Broadway community theater
group of New Paltz, New York; this outstanding organization marked its
golden milestone at its Annual 90 Miles Off Broadway Cabaret, Friday,
March 14-Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Reformed Church in New Paltz;
and
WHEREAS, In addition, a special Children's Summer Theatre musical will
be staged in July 2014, and a 50th Anniversary show in November 2014
will celebrate the past and salute the future of the organization; and
WHEREAS, Passionate in the belief that theatre is an essential part of
a thriving community, the mission of 90 Miles Off Broadway is to provide
affordable, worthwhile entertainment for adults and children alike; and
WHEREAS, 90 Miles off Broadway produces four shows a year, performing
at venues throughout the community ranging from New Paltz and Highland
high schools, to restaurants, churches, and even under a tent; and
WHEREAS, Fifty years ago, the founding members of 90 Miles Off Broad-
way put on their first play, "George Washington Slept Here," and regu-
larly mounted American theatre standards such as "Guys and Dolls,"
"Fiddler on the Roof" and "Hello, Dolly!"; recent fare includes "9-5:
The Musical," and a stage adaptation of Little Women; and
WHEREAS, The fledgling organization was originally housed at Duzine
Elementary School and had the keys to New Paltz Central High School; and
WHEREAS, From its founding days to today, 90 Miles Off Broadway has
been a vital part of the New Paltz community; its productions are regu-
larly promoted and reviewed by the local media, and local schoolchildren
regularly attend its performances and workshops; and
WHEREAS, As a volunteer, community-based group, 90 Miles Off
Broadway's talented and hardworking members have both the challenge and
the opportunity of fulfilling multiple roles within the organization,
giving everyone involved the sense of pride of ownership that illus-
trates the strength of this enduring and beloved cultural institution;
and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body recognizes the importance of the
performing arts, which act to inspire, enlighten, and unify people from
all cultural backgrounds through the transcendent power of human
expression; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that individuals and
organizations whose commitment and creative talents have contributed to
the entertainment and cultural enrichment of their community, and have
shown a long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have
earned the recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of 90 Miles Off Broadway; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to 90 Miles Off Broadway.
