LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to declare
May 3-11, 2014, as Travel and Tourism Week in the State of New York, in
conjunction with the observance of National Travel and Tourism Week

WHEREAS, Travel and tourism are vitally important to the economic health
and well-being of the people of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to memori-
alize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to declare May 3-11, 2014, as Travel and
Tourism Week in the State of New York, in conjunction with the obser-
vance of National Travel and Tourism Week; and
WHEREAS, In 1983, the United States Congress passed a joint resolution
calling for the establishment of National Travel and Tourism Week and
since 1984, the first full week of May has been set aside to celebrate
tourism in our great nation; and
WHEREAS, This year's theme is the Travel Effect, the advantages we all
gain from travel; this will focus on America's "Day Off Deficit,"
exploring what it could mean to individuals, businesses and the economy
if American workers were motivated to use more of the time off they have
earned and deserve; and
WHEREAS, Generating two trillion dollars in economic output, travel
and tourism helps grow local, state, and national economies, as well as
helping to keep taxes lower through the revenues they bring in; and
WHEREAS, Travel and Tourism support approximately 14.6 million jobs,
including 7.7 million directly in the tourism industry and 6.9 million
in other industries; it is estimated one in eight jobs in the United
States depend on this pivotal aspect of the economy; and
WHEREAS, Investing in these areas represents the potential to
strengthen State and local businesses, while reducing stress and enhanc-
ing people's life experience; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to declare May 3-11, 2014, as Trav-
el and Tourism Week in the State of New York, in conjunction with
National Travel and Tourism Week; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
