LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 125th Anniversary of Highland
Hospital on April 10, 2014
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize those
hospitals within the State of New York which provide outstanding medical
care and vital services to meet the healthcare needs of their patients;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate 125th Anniversary of Highland Hospital, to be celebrated on April
10, 2014; and
WHEREAS, This illustrious institution's roots date back to 1889, when
the hospital on the hill overlooking beautiful Highland Park first
opened its doors as one of the first homeopathic hospitals in the United
States; and
WHEREAS, Hahnemann Homeopathic Hospital, as it was first known as,
started with 20 beds and only six physicians; it has since gown to
become a 261-bed facility offering tertiary care; its medical staff now
totals 1200 faculty and community physicians, as well as approximately
2600 employees; and
WHEREAS, Highland Hospital is the regional leader in specialty
services such as bariatric surgery, orthopedics, women's services, radi-
ation oncology, cardiology, neurology, and many more; they lead the
state in the number of minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries, and
deliver more babies than any other hospital in the Rochester area; and
WHEREAS, During its long and distinguished history, Highland Hospital
has many notable achievements; it was the first hospital in the United
States to establish a clinical chemical laboratory; furthermore it was
also the first in the nation to use endocavitary radiation as an alter-
native to colostomy surgery; and
WHEREAS, In 1921, Highland Hospital became the first facility to use
insulin in the treatment of diabetes when Dr. John Williams administered
a life-saving injection to the son of the Chief Legal Council for Kodak;
and
WHEREAS, In its dedicated service to the health of its patients, High-
land Hospital held the first family medicine training program in New
York State; it is also proud to be the first hospital in the Rochester
area to ban smoking indoors and allow expecting fathers into the deliv-
ery room; and
WHEREAS, One aspect which makes this medical center so unique is its
warm, caring environment; the culture is rooted in the Highland Promise,
the hospital's commitment to service and operational excellence which
places patients and their families at the heart of all they do; and
WHEREAS, This tremendous milestone would not be possible without the
support of a great community and the numerous contributions of its high-
ly talented professionals who have worked to fulfill Highland Hospital's
commitment to excellence in health care; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their staff and have shown a long
and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the recog-
nition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of Highland Hospital; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Highland Hospital.
