LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating student-athlete Javon McCrea upon
the occasion of being named the 2014 Mid American Conference Player of
the Year

WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved
only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit, nurtured by
dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical develop-
ment of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, imparting a desire for success and developing a sense of
fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those young people within the State of New York who, by
achieving outstanding success in athletic competition, have inspired and
brought pride to their school and community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late student-athlete Javon McCrea upon the occasion of being named the
2014 Mid American Conference Player of the Year on March 12, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Senior forward Javon McCrea has made an indelible impression
on the University at Buffalo (UB) basketball program; for the past four
years this athlete has demonstrated not only exceptional athletic prow-
ess, but also determination, discipline and leadership; during his final
season, he has been named MAC East Player of the week three times; and
WHEREAS, Javon McCrea is UB's all-time leading scorer with 2004
points, third-leading rebounder with 988, and second player in UB histo-
ry with 250 blocked shots; during the 2013-2014 season he averaged 18.9
points and 9.8 rebounds per game, leading the Mid-American Conference in
scoring and the league in rebounds; he was also 10th in the league in
minutes played; and
WHEREAS, Nicknamed "The Kraken," Javon McCrea will graduate in May
2014 with a bachelor's degree in sociology from SUNY University at
Buffalo; and
WHEREAS, He is 10th among all active players nationally in career
points and eighth in career rebounds; the only active player in the
nation with at least 1,900 points, 900 rebounds, 200 blocked shots, and
200 assists, he is 14th in MAC history in scoring, 18th in rebounding
and fifth in blocked shots; and
WHEREAS, The only child of Shannon McCrea, Javon McCrea is a native of
Newark, New York, where his prodigious athletic abilities were first
displayed; he was a star player for Newark High School, and was named
Finger Lakes Player of the Year three times; he was also named the DEMO-
CRAT AND CHRONICLE 2010 All-Greater Rochester Boys Player of the Year
after leading his school to the state tournament final; and
WHEREAS, He made the AGR team three times, became Newark High School's
all-time scorer, and averaged 22 points, 14 rebounds, and eight blocked
shots his senior year; this stellar player also set a single-game
Section V record with an amazing 17 blocks in one game; and
WHEREAS, His talent apparent, Javon McCrea was heavily recruited by
many colleges, including Big East giant Georgetown University; however,
the thoughtful student-athlete chose to remain in the great State of New
York, close to his mother, and part of building a legacy as a player
with the UB Bulls; and
WHEREAS, As a freshman, Javon McCrea proved to be not just one of the
best freshman performers in the MAC Conference, but in all of college
basketball; he was the sixth man on the UB team, but still led the Bulls

with 101 offensive rebounds, finishing 19th in the MAC in scoring, and
eighth in rebounds; he was named the Mid-American Conference Freshman of
the Year, as well as All-MAC Honorable Mention team; in addition, he was
tabbed as one of 21 players on the CollegiateInsider.com Mid-Major
Freshman All-America team; and
WHEREAS, Four years later, Javon McCrea has truly established that he
is a dominant force on the basketball court with a bright future ahead
of him; and
WHEREAS, Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride and
accomplishment, and Javon McCrea has clearly made a contribution to the
spirit of excellence which is a tradition of his school; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate student-athlete Javon McCrea upon the occasion of being
named the 2014 Mid American Conference Player of the Year on March 12,
2014; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Javon McCrea.
