LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Stephen M. Moravick, Sr.,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Stephen "Steve" M. Moravick, Sr. died on March 21, 2014, at
the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, Born on March 27, 1925, in North Salem, New York, Stephen M.
Moravick, Sr. was one of 11 children; and
WHEREAS, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr.'s family moved to Lincolndale, New
York, where he graduated from Somers Central School District in January
of 1943; and
WHEREAS, He served his country as a member of the United States Army
and served in World War II with the 329th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Thun-
derbolt Division; and
WHEREAS, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr. landed on Normandy Beach on D-Day
plus 12; while in Northern France, Steve and his platoon destroyed a
German tank and captured two German soldiers; for this act of bravery,
he received the Silver Star, the third highest medal awarded for bravery
in the military; and
WHEREAS, After being wounded, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr. was sent to
England to recuperate and then to Belgium and was made First Sergeant of
the 78th Port Company; and
WHEREAS, Upon the end of the war in the Pacific, Stephen M. Moravick,
Sr. arrived home to Lincolndale, New York, on Christmas night in 1945;
along with the Silver Star, he was awarded the Purple Heart with clus-
ter, Bronze Star and 11 other medals for his outstanding service to his
country; and
WHEREAS, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr. was also honored at the National
World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.; he is a Life Member of the
Military Order of the Purple Heart and was honored at the National
Purple Heart Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, In 1952, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr. married Rose DePaoli and
they enjoyed 61 years together; and
WHEREAS, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr. distinguished himself in his profes-
sion and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of his community; and
WHEREAS, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr. worked for the New York Telephone
Company for 35 years; and
WHEREAS, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr.'s commitment to excellence, and his
spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, includ-
ing charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, An avid outdoorsman, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr. was an expert
deer hunter and sharpshooter, knife maker, electrician, builder, and
overall handy man; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr. is a Life Member and
was the current Sergeant of Arms of the Somers VFW Post No. 8213, and
could be seen proudly selling poppies in Somerstown Center and partic-
ipating in parades; and
WHEREAS, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr. is survived by his beloved wife,
Rose (DePaoli); daughter, Stephanie (Bill) Carter; son, Steve (Carrie)
Moravick; and daughter, Suzy Moravick; as well as three grandchildren,
Nicholas (Michelette), Ryan, and Lauren Moravick; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Stephen M. Moravick, Sr. leaves a legacy of service to our
country, a strong work ethic, his love for the outdoors and an unwaver-
ing dedication to his family and his faith; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Stephen M. Moravick, Sr., distinguished citizen and
devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Stephen M. Moravick, Sr.
