LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending The Honorable Councilwoman Valerie M.
Cartright upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition
by the Ambassador for Christ International Outreach Ministry and Gateway
Christian Center on Sunday, May 4, 2014
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, A great community is only as great as those persons who
provide exemplary service, whether through participation in voluntary
programs, through unique personal achievement in their profession or
other endeavors, or simply through a lifetime of good citizenship; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend The Honor-
able Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright upon the occasion of her desig-
nation for special recognition by the Ambassador for Christ Interna-
tional Outreach Ministry and Gateway Christian Center at its 4th Annual
Pastors and Women of Distinction Appreciation Awards Gala on Sunday, May
4, 2014, at Floral Terrace, Floral Park, New York; and
WHEREAS, Valerie M. Cartright is being recognized for her exemplary
work and commitment to her community, which serves to empower others;
and
WHEREAS, Elected on November 5, 2013, Valerie M. Cartright is current-
ly serving her first term as Councilwoman in the Town of Brookhaven; for
the past decade, she has served as a tireless and community-conscious
advocate and attorney; and
WHEREAS, A Senior Associate at the Law Offices of Frederick K. Brew-
ington, Valerie M. Cartright earned her Juris Doctorate from Touro
College Jacob D. Fuschberg Law Center in Suffolk County, after receiving
her undergraduate degree in International Studies from West Virginia
University; she has gained invaluable experience in the areas of
construction law, insurance defense, general civil and criminal law,
family, education and labor, and employment law; and
WHEREAS, Valerie M. Cartright's advocacy skills have warranted her
First Place Award and Best Oralist Award in Touro Law School's John S.
Bainbridge Moot Court Competition, as well as being named a Regional
Finalist of the National Black Law Students' Association Frederick Doug-
las Moot Court Competition; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Valerie M. Cartright served as the first Afri-
can-American Chair of the largest section of the New York State Bar
Association, the Young Lawyers Section, and published an article in the
NEW YORK LAW JOURNAL entitled, "The Integrity of the American Justice
System"; and
WHEREAS, In addition to practicing law, Valerie M. Cartright currently
serves as an Adjunct Instructor at St. Joseph's College in the Human
Services Management and Leadership Master's program, teaching a Leader-
ship, Law and Ethics course; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when a person
of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our attention it is
appropriate to publicly and jubilantly proclaim and commend that indi-
vidual for the edification of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend The Honorable Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright upon the occa-
sion of her designation for special recognition by the Ambassador for
Christ International Outreach Ministry and Gateway Christian Center on
Sunday, May 4, 2014, noting her unremitting and compassionate faith and
her exemplary service to God, man, and her community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Valerie M. Cartright.
