LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Plain-
view-Old Bethpage Public Library

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across the great State
of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citi-
zenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 50th Anniversary of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library
to be celebrated on Sunday, April 27, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The Plainview Library opened its doors on January 7, 1956, in
the Jamaica Avenue School; in 1957, the Library relocated to rented
space in the Morton Village Shopping Center, where it remained until the
current building opened in 1963; and
WHEREAS, In March of 1966, the Library's charter was amended and its
name was changed to the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library to accu-
rately reflect the one school district and two communities it serves;
and
WHEREAS, In 2005, the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library celebrated
a building expansion which included a 236 seat auditorium and an
expanded Family Center; with technological advances changing how almost
everything is done, the Library continues to be the place to learn and
to access information; and
WHEREAS, Public computers, free WIFI, basic computer classes, CDs and
DVDs, audiobooks, playaways, eBooks and eBook readers allow the communi-
ty to keep up with new technology; and
WHEREAS, The Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library continues to be a
community center, providing educational and entertainment programs for
all ages and meeting room space for over 90 community groups; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Plainview-
Old Bethpage Public Library, in partnership with a vital community that
values learning, may take just pride in its purposeful growth, as it
looks forward to continuing to serve the educational, cultural and
intellectual needs of the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public
Library; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library.
