LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Nellie Morton upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2014 Third Age Achievement Award in
Education by Senior Services of Albany
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities, are an asset beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Nellie Morton has given not only of her time and energies but
also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special recognition; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Nellie Morton
upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2014 Third Age
Achievement Award in Education by Senior Services of Albany, to be cele-
brated at its 18th Annual Third Age Achievement Awards luncheon on
Friday, May 2, 2014, at Wolfert's Roost Country Club, Albany, New York;
and
WHEREAS, Albany, New York, resident Nellie Morton is a fearless educa-
tion advocate who works assiduously for the educational needs of chil-
dren and adults in the community, especially in the area of literacy;
and
WHEREAS, Nellie Morton has been called upon to contribute her time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Following her retirement in 2005 after working 40 years for
the State of New York, Nellie Morton dedicated herself to making a
difference; as a member of the Trinity Alliance Board of Directors, she
has been the visionary behind the organization's Capital South Campus
Center, and The Literacy Zone at the center, which will provide litera-
cy, English proficiency, and academic achievement services to adults;
and
WHEREAS, In addition, for 18 years Nellie Morton has volunteered at
the Junior Achievement Program in Albany Schools; this energetic woman
also teaches Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at Union Missionary
Baptist Church, and dances with Trinity Alliance's "Dancing With Our
Elders Program"; and
WHEREAS, Nellie Morton was married to the late Morris Morton, Sr. for
53 years, and has been accompanied throughout by her children and grand-
children, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and
rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Nellie Morton has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Nellie Morton has displayed through-
out her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Nellie Morton upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the 2014 Third Age Achievement Award in Education by Senior Services of
Albany; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Nellie Morton.
