LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Oneida Chapter of the Daughters of
the American Revolution as it promotes Constitution Week

WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in this Nation, and the great
State of New York, is reflective of the purposeful lives and good works
of those patriotic and civic-minded organizations and community members
who dedicate their lives to the service of others; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Oneida Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as it
promotes Constitution Week September 17-23, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a non-pro-
fit, non-political volunteer women's service organization; DAR members
are dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education and patriot-
ism in communities across the Nation; and
WHEREAS, The Oneida Chapter, NSDAR, is the 4th oldest chapter in New
York and 49th in the Nation; it was organized in June of 1893 and is the
first women's society to be formed in Utica, New York; and
WHEREAS, The United States Constitution stands as a testament to the
tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties and
freedoms and to ensure those unalienable rights to every American; and
WHEREAS, The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started by
the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1955 when DAR petitioned
Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the
observance of Constitution Week; it was signed into public law on August
2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower; and
WHEREAS, Through its promotion of Constitution Week, the Oneida Chap-
ter DAR will emphasize citizens' responsibilities for protecting and
defending the Constitution, and inform people that the Constitution is
the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of
life; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Constitution Week encourages the study of
historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in
September of 1787; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Oneida Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution
as it promotes Constitution Week; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Oneida Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revo-
lution.
