LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Mark A. Patterson upon the occasion of
his designation as recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus in Political
Science Award by the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Mark A. Patterson has given not only of his time and energies
but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Mark A.
Patterson upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Distinguished Alumnus in Political Science Award by the Rockefeller
College of Public Affairs and Policy, to be celebrated at its 2014 Alum-
ni Dinner and Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 16, 2014, at the New York
State Museum, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Each year, Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy
honors individuals such as Mark A. Patterson, for their outstanding
contributions in the areas of political science, public administration,
leadership, and continuing professional development; and
WHEREAS, Mark A. Patterson is Partner in the Washington, DC office of
Perkins Coie LLP, a law firm with more than 900 lawyers and 20 offices
across the United States and around the world; he is also a Senior
Fellow at the Center for American Progress; and
WHEREAS, Before joining Perkins Coie, Mark A. Patterson served from
2009 to 2013 as Chief of Staff of the Department of the Treasury; he is
the longest serving Chief of Staff in Treasury history, and is a recipi-
ent of the Alexander Hamilton Award, the Department's highest honor; and
WHEREAS, Mark A. Patterson is a graduate of the State University of
New York at Albany and the Catholic University of America School of Law;
and
WHEREAS, Prior to his service with the Treasury Department, Mark A.
Patterson was a member of the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition Team
where he led the transition's work to secure Senate confirmation of the
president-elect's cabinet; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he previously served for 15 years as a staff
member in the United States Senate; from 1999 to 2004, he was the Policy
Director for Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota; he
began work in the Senate in 1984 as an intern in the office of Senator
Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York; and
WHEREAS, A member of the Board of Advisors of the Washington Center
for Internships and Academic Seminars, Mark A. Patterson is also a
member of the Board of Directors of the Paul Robert Carey Foundation, a
charitable organization devoted to the improving quality of life for
cancer patients; and
WHEREAS, Mark A. Patterson's commentary has been featured on CNN,
CNBC, MSNBC, BBC World News and BBC Radio, National Public Radio, and
has been published in THE WASHINGTON POST as well as POLITICO and other
media outlets; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his loving wife, Jennifer, and
their two beautiful daughters, all of whom feel privileged to be a part
of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Mark A. Patterson has stood constant
in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Mark A. Patterson has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Mark A. Patterson upon the occasion of his designation as recipi-
ent of the Distinguished Alumnus in Political Science Award by the Rock-
efeller College of Public Affairs and Policy; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mark A. Patterson.
