LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Harry E. Brown upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Bay Shore-Brightwaters 2014 Distin-
guished Citizen Award

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Harry E. Brown has given not only of his time and energies
but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special recognition; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Harry E. Brown
upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Bay Shore-
Brightwaters 2014 Distinguished Citizen Award by the Chamber of Commerce
of Greater Bay Shore and the Bay Shore Business Improvement District
(BID) to be celebrated at its 14th Annual Awards Dinner on Thursday, May
1, 2014, at Captain Bill's, Bay Shore, New York; and
WHEREAS, Harry E. Brown, one of Bay Shore's most respected residents,
is greatly admired for his unwavering devotion and service to his commu-
nity; he is receiving this esteemed award for his professional excel-
lence and leadership, his spirit of generosity, and his service and
advocacy on behalf of Bay Shore; and
WHEREAS, Born in Dr. King's Hospital and raised in Bay Shore, he is a
1966 graduate of Bay Shore High School; and
WHEREAS, After earning his teaching degree from Cortland State
College, Harry E. Brown pursued his graduate studies at Stony Brook
University; after graduate studies, he was recruited by a growing Long
Island-based heavy equipment manufacturing firm; he is still active in
this industry, currently serving as Vice President of Able Weldbuilt
Industries, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, As his children attended public school, Harry E. Brown became
increasingly active in several educational issues; this prompted him to
run for a school board seat and was elected to the Bay Shore School
board in 1991; and
WHEREAS, Along with the other board members, Harry E. Brown served the
Bay Shore Schools with a twofold vision: to institute change that
strengthened the educational system while improving the community at
large; and
WHEREAS, He was instrumental in creating the Office of School Communi-
ty Relations which established an avenue of communication between the
school district and the community; he then hired Dr. Evelyn Holman, the
new Superintendent who shared the board's vision; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Harry E. Brown, along with the others, created
the Summit Council, the driving force of the rebirth of the Bay Shore
community; and
WHEREAS, Harry E. Brown has been called upon to contribute his time
and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, After leaving the Board of Education in 2000, Harry E. Brown
reactivated the Bay Shore High School Alumni Association; under his able
leadership, the association was incorporated as a not-for-profit organ-
ization which has been raising funds for student scholarships for the
past 14 years; and
WHEREAS, Recently, Harry E. Brown has served as moderator of the annu-
al Meet the Candidates Night for school board elections; he also enjoys
participating in the annual Bay Shore-Blightwaters St. Patrick's Day
Parade representing the Bay Shore High School Alumni Association; addi-

tionally, Harry enjoys helping organize the annual Main Street Community
Halloween Garden event; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Harry E. Brown has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Teresa, and their
three children, Johanna, Patrick and Conner, as well as five grandchil-
dren, Gavin, Keenan, Beckett, Aidan, and Kayla, all of whom feel privi-
leged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Harry E. Brown has displayed
throughout his life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Harry E. Brown upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the Bay Shore-Brightwaters 2014 Distinguished Citizen Award; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Harry E. Brown.
