LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring John Canale upon the occasion of his
selection as the 2014 Veteran of the Year by the Veteran's Council of
Oswego

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor John Canale
upon the occasion of his selection as the 2014 Veteran of the Year by
the Veteran's Council of Oswego on Saturday, May 24, 2014; and
WHEREAS, John Canale was chosen for this prestigious honor in infinite
gratitude and appreciation for his noble service to his country; and
WHEREAS, John Canale, a United States Army Veteran, served his country
in the Battle of the Bulge, helping to beat back Hitler's Ardennes
Offensive during the winter of 1944-45 during World War II; and
WHEREAS, John Canale has served as Chairman of the Oswego Battle of
the Bulge Veterans whose members perform educational services for their
neighbors and friends, sharing their stories and military traditions
with new generations; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable veteran remains active in his community; he
is a substitute teacher at Oswego High School and is the author of two
recently published books; and
WHEREAS, John Canale also served as a city alderman in the city of
Oswego for 21 years; he is a member of the SUNY Oswego Athletic Hall of
Fame and the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout has been his wife of 61 years, Angeline
Canale, who served as a Lieutenant in the Army Nurses Corps, and who
feels privileged to be a part of his life and rejoices in his achieve-
ments; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who risked their
lives for their beloved Nation; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad, John
Canale has demonstrated his love for his country and merits forevermore,
the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor John Canale upon the occasion of his selection as the 2014 Veteran
of the Year by the Veteran's Council of Oswego; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to John Canale.
