LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Russell E. Newkirk upon the occasion
of his induction into the Bishop Maginn High School Hall of Fame as a
Distinguished Alumnus on May 2, 2014
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, A great community is only as great as those persons and
organizations that provide exemplary service, whether through partic-
ipation in voluntary programs, through unique personal achievement in
their profession or other endeavors, or through a lifetime of good citi-
zenship; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Russell E.
Newkirk upon the occasion of his induction into the Bishop Maginn High
School Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Alumnus, to be celebrated at its
Induction Dinner on Friday, May 2, 2014, at Shaker Ridge Country Club,
Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, A 1967 graduate of Vincentian Institute, Dr. Russell E.
Newkirk was a member of The National Honor Society and received Varsity
letters for track and field, as well as tennis; he went on to graduate
from Hamilton College in 1971 where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Russell E. Newkirk received his medical degree from
McGill University in 1975 and completed his internship in 1976 at Mary
Imogene Bassett Hospital in Dartmouth; he completed his residency from
1977 to 1980; and
WHEREAS, Receiving his Board Certification in Anatomic and Clinical
Pathology in 1980, Dr. Russell E. Newkirk began work at his Pathology
practice in St. Peter's Hospital; in 1989, he was named Chief of Pathol-
ogy at St. Peter's Hospital, and remained in this esteemed position
until 2012; in addition, he was the President at Maplewood Pathology,
P.C. from 1987 until 2012; and
WHEREAS, In 2012, Dr. Russell E. Newkirk was honored as St. Peter's
Hospital Physician of the Year; throughout his illustrious career, he
has worked as a physician volunteer with Global Health Ministry, during
which time he made medic missions to Peru, Guatemala and Haiti; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, he has been a physician volunteer for the Capi-
tal District Rescue Mission from 2005 to present, and is past President
of the Capital District Masters Hockey League; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his children, Ben, Russell,
Richard and Tristan, his twin sister, Bonnie, and his four brothers,
Ray, Tom, Pete and Bob, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his
life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, The quality and character of life in this Nation, and in the
great State of New York, is reflective of the purposeful lives and good
works of those civic-minded community members who dedicate their lives
and career to the service of others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Russell E. Newkirk upon the occasion of his induction into the
Bishop Maginn High School Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Alumnus; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Russell E. Newkirk.
