LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION expressing sincerest, heartfelt condolences to
the South Korean community in the wake of the sinking of the ferry,
Sewol, which capsized off the coast of Jindo Island on Wednesday, April
16, 2014

WHEREAS, In the proud tradition of the people of the State of New York,
this Legislative Body expresses its sincerest, heartfelt condolences to
the people of the Republic of Korea in the wake of the sinking of the
ferry, Sewol, and applauds all those who acted immediately and hero-
ically in the face of danger, risking their own lives to bring others to
safety; and
WHEREAS, On Wednesday, April 16, 2014, the ferry, Sewol, capsized off
the coast of Jindo Island, Jindo-gun, South Korea, carrying approximate-
ly 443 passengers, including 325 students and their teachers from Danwon
High School, traveling to Jeju Island on a school trip; and
WHEREAS,Approximately 130 people have been reported as safely rescued
from the frigid waters; and
WHEREAS, A total of 47 divers were conducting search operations, while
198 rescue ships and 37 airplanes were deployed in the search for survi-
vors; and
WHEREAS, With the cause of this horrific accident still undetermined,
authorities are attempting to bring answers to grieving loved ones
suffering the pain and devastation of losing a cherished member of their
family or not yet knowing the fate of their missing loved one; and
WHEREAS, The people of the State of New York stand steadfast in their
solidarity with the South Korean community victimized by the tragic
event of April 16, 2014; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
express sincerest, heartfelt condolences to the South Korean community
in the wake of this tragedy, and to extend the sympathy and heartfelt
prayers of all New Yorkers; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Consul General of the Republic of Korea in New York,
Se-joo Son.
