LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Juanita L. Sherwood recipient of the
National Association of University Women - Queens Branch's Woman of the
Year Award at its 60th Anniversary and Scholarship Luncheon on May 18,
2014
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and honor
individuals who distinguish themselves in their profession and in
service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in keeping with its long-stand-
ing tradition, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Juanita L.
Sherwood upon the occasion of her designation as the recipient of the
National Association of University Women - Queens Branch's Woman of the
Year Award at its 60th Anniversary and Scholarship Luncheon on May 18,
2014; and
WHEREAS, An advocate for public education for more than two decades,
Juanita Sherwood has devoted countless hours and years of study to
ensure that all children receive a first rate education; her interest in
becoming an educator dates back to her childhood, attending P.S. 90
Elementary School in Harlem, New York; she credits Ms. Lehrer, her 6th
grade teacher, for planting the seed and is forever grateful to many
colleagues, professors, and family for their support along the way; and
WHEREAS, Juanita Sherwood graduated from City College of New York with
a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and furthered her
studies at St. John's University, earning a Master of Science degree in
Reading; she also earned a certificate in Supervision and Administration
from Queens College and is currently pursuing her doctorate in Instruc-
tional Leadership and Technology; and
WHEREAS, After a change in career in 1992, Juanita Sherwood began her
journey as an educator with the City of New York's Department of Educa-
tion (DOE); while working with the DOE she earned full-time tenure serv-
ing as a classroom teacher and reading specialist; and
WHEREAS, She continued her career with Westbury Public Schools in
Nassau County, Long Island and currently holds the position of Assistant
Principal at Dryden Street School; and
WHEREAS, Prior to assuming this position, Juanita Sherwood served as
Director of Grants for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, as
well as Coordinator for the Reading Excellence Act Grant program; and
WHEREAS, During her tenure and leadership with Westbury Public
Schools, she successfully implemented several programs addressing the
academic, social and emotional development of students; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her work impacting the lives of school-aged
children, Juanita Sherwood is a founding member of the Long Island Coun-
cil of Administrative Women in Education (LICAWE) - 2002 and currently
services as its President; and
WHEREAS, The focus of LICAWE is to provide support for practicing and
aspiring women administrators; and
WHEREAS, LICAWE, an affiliate of the New York State Association of
Woman in Administration (NYSAWA), promotes gender-balanced leadership
and the advancement of equity and diversity in schools; and
WHEREAS, Juanita Sherwood is passionate about community service and
joined the Queens Branch of the National Association of University Women
(NAUW) in 1997; she works diligently to ensure that its scholarship
luncheon is a success, as it is the organization's main fundraiser; and
WHEREAS, NAUW is an organization whose mission is to serve women,
youth and the disadvantaged by addressing educational, human relations
and civic issues; and
WHEREAS, Juanita Sherwood has two loving adult children and one
National Junior's Honor Society granddaughter; she resides in Queens,
New York and has done so for more than twenty-five years; now, there-
fore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Juanita Sherwood upon the occasion of her designation as the
recipient of the National Association of University Women - Queens
Branch's Woman of the Year Award at the organization's Scholarship
Luncheon and Celebration of its 60th Anniversary on May 18, 2014; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Juanita L. Sherwood.
