LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Cazenovia Fire Department and the
Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps for their actions which saved
the life of a child on October 26, 2013
WHEREAS, The firefighters and emergency medical personnel of New York
State are renowned throughout the Nation; their reputation is synonymous
with excellence in the arduous field of rescuing those in danger; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend the caring concern and heroic acts of individuals and organiza-
tions who take prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations,
nobly risking their lives in an effort to preserve the life of another;
and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commend the Cazenovia Fire
Department and Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps for their
actions which saved the life of a child on October 26, 2013; they will
be honored at the Madison County Firemen's Association and Volunteer
Firemen's Auxiliary Banquet on Friday, May 9, 2014; and
WHEREAS, On October 26, 2013, a 10-year old boy was playing hide-and-
seek outside at a Halloween party when he accidentally fell 18 feet into
a well; and
WHEREAS, After receiving an emergency call, the Cazenovia Fire Depart-
ment (CFD) and the Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps (CAVAC)
immediately rushed to the scene, encountering an extremely desperate
situation; and
WHEREAS, A young boy had fallen into a well opening 24 inches in diam-
eter, preventing first responders from accessing the trapped child; in
addition, no one was able to make any contact with the boy; and
WHEREAS, Moving quickly, CFD units were dispatched to secure sight
lighting, bring ladders, and transport other rescue equipment to the
well; using a special long handled pike pole, the emergency personnel on
the scene discovered the boy; and
WHEREAS, CFD members then found a way to secure the pike pole to the
boy's apparel and were able to pull him hand over hand to safety; and
WHEREAS, CAVAC personnel were well prepared on stand-by, and imme-
diately began life saving procedures; the child was badly hurt and had a
difficult prognosis; and
WHEREAS, Displaying true professionalism and teamwork, members of both
rescue groups carried out chest compressions and the most advanced life
saving methods possible once in the ambulance; he was then driven under
police escort to SUNY Upstate Medical Center for further medical atten-
tion; and
WHEREAS, The young boy miraculously survived that day thanks to the
heroic and dedicated efforts of numerous members of the Cazenovia Fire
Department and Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps; and
WHEREAS, The CFD and CAVAC, through their spontaneous and heroic
actions, demonstrated their character and compassion for the welfare of
others, personifying the collective concern of ordinary citizens across
the community of the State of New York who voluntarily respond when
others are in need of help; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body, pause in its deliberations, to
commend the Cazenovia Fire Department and Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambu-
lance Corps for their actions which saved the life of the young boy; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Cazenovia Fire Department and Cazenovia Area Volunteer
Ambulance Corps.
