LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Detective Walter J. Brant upon the occa-
sion of his designation as recipient of the Man of Distinction Award on
May 22, 2014

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Detective
Walter J. Brant upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Man of Distinction Award, to be celebrated at the 7th Annual Men of
Distinction and Women of Valor Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 22,
2014; and
WHEREAS, The Men of Distinction and Women of Valor Awards Ceremony is
held each year to recognize and pay just tribute to outstanding and
accomplished individuals whose leadership roles have had a significant
impact on the daily lives of the people of the State of New York, and
who have gone above and beyond the call of duty; and
WHEREAS, In August 1993, Detective Walter J. Brant was appointed to
the New York City Police Department; in February 1994, he was assigned
to Police Service Area No. 2 and is currently a 2nd Grade Detective for
the Community Affairs Unit; and
WHEREAS, Detective Walter J. Brant is a highly motivated police offi-
cer committed to enhancing the quality of community and police relation-
ships; he has taken a personal interest and dedicated his own time to
ensure the success of all programs he initiates or participates in; and
WHEREAS, In 1996, Detective Walter J. Brant initiated the development
of an annual bike-riding event known as The Courtesy Professional
Respect Bike Ride which brought together both the youth and adults of
all ages from within the community; and
WHEREAS, In addition, immediately following the terrorist acts of
September 11, Detective Walter J. Brant erected the first permanent
memorial located in the center of the Louis H. Pink Development; the
memorial consists of six statues dedicated to members of the agencies
that gave their ultimate sacrifice, and are surrounded by a tree planted
by the community as a declaration of their appreciation of the sacri-
fices made; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Detective Walter J. Brant was an Executive Board
Member of Drug Enforcement for Youth, a program which is a part of the
Weed and Seed Program run by the District Attorney's Office; this
program takes youth from targeted areas where drugs and violence are
prevalent, and for two weeks during the summer these youths are trans-
ported daily to Floyd Bennett Field for a program which includes
lectures regarding violence, self-esteem, leadership, and gang and drug
awareness; and
WHEREAS, With 21 years on the police force, Detective Walter J. Brant
has received numerous awards such as the Congressional Record, several
Law Enforcement Awards, and the Hemmerdinger Award which is only
presented to six chosen distinguished officers yearly; and
WHEREAS, Detective Walter J. Brant has had six successful seasons of
flag football in connection with the Police Athletic League, which
brings together youth from various NYCHA Housing Developments within the
confines of the 73rd, 75th, and 77th Precincts; currently, he is
involved with Cops and Kids Basketball, also in conjunction with the
Police Athletic League; and
WHEREAS, A firm believer that nothing and no one should go unnoticed
and everyone is a winner, Detective Walter J. Brant assures that all who

participate in the youth sports events receive something to always
remember they too are a success within their community; and
WHEREAS, Detective Walter J. Brant has had a significant role in crime
reduction throughout the communities; he reaches out to the community,
youth and adults alike, which could only ensure a continuous bond and
positive fostered relationship with the New York Police Department that
focuses on building a stronger, more unified community; and
WHEREAS, This dedicated man is consistently planning events which
boost the community morale, fostering better relationships between the
community and children alike, but most importantly with all residents of
Brooklyn Housing Authority Developments and the Police Service Area No.
2, which in turn proves as a positive imprint throughout the entire
Borough; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Detective Walter J. Brant upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the Man of Distinction Award on May 22, 2014; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Detective Walter J. Brant.
