LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Yessica Escobar upon the occasion of her
designation as the recipient of the 2014 Outstanding Student Narrative
Award by the Suffolk Association for Continuing Community Education on
June 12, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary pursuit of education as adults; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Yessica Escobar upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
2014 Outstanding Student Narrative Award by the Suffolk Association for
Continuing Community Education, to be celebrated at its Awards Dinner on
Thursday, June 12, 2014, at The Watermill Restaurant, Smithtown, New
York; and
WHEREAS, The Suffolk Association for Continuing Community Education
(SACCE) was founded to promote lifelong learning opportunities for
adults within Suffolk County and beyond the county's borders; its
purpose is to advance adult education as a vital factor in adult growth,
development and fulfillment; and
WHEREAS, Through the sharing of resources and ideas with colleagues in
the Nassau Association, and under the umbrella of the New York State
Association, SACCE strives to increase the recognition of and respect
for continuing community education and its professionals; in addition,
it is the goal of the organization to exercise leadership in the advoca-
cy of adult community and continuing education at the local, state and
national levels; and
WHEREAS, Yessica Escobar came to the United States after two years of
college at the University of El Salvador; her grasp of the English
language in just one and a half years at The Opening Word, a literacy
program which teaches the English language to immigrant women, is excep-
tional; in addition, she has successfully completed all of her classes;
and
WHEREAS, With a plan to continue her education and pursue her dream of
becoming a nurse, Yessica Escobar currently works in several part-time
positions to support herself; she has also taken a course in Business
Skills and received a scholarship through BOCES; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, soon after she began her course, Yessica Escobar
was hired part time as a receptionist in a dentist office; within a
short time, the doctor saw her ability to learn quickly and began train-
ing her to work with insurance forms, as well as to provide support as a
translator for both Middle Eastern and Hispanic patients; and
WHEREAS, Appreciated for her bright personality and eagerness to
learn, Yessica Escobar then began training in patient x-rays, as well as
the naming and use of dental tools, allowing her to assist the dentist
with direct patient care; and
WHEREAS, Yessica Escobar continues to be an inspiration to everyone
who knows her, and has made many of her dreams, by moving to America,
come true; and
WHEREAS, Yessica Escobar may now stand with just pride in assessing
her achievements, experiencing the satisfaction of her labors and the
joy of her accomplishments, eager to face the challenge of new ventures;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Yessica Escobar upon the occasion of her designation as the recip-
ient of the 2014 Outstanding Student Narrative Award by the Suffolk

Association for Continuing Community Education on June 12, 2014; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Yessica Escobar.
