LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the National Association of Letter
Carriers Branch 358, Troy, New York, upon the occasion of being named
the 2014 Person of the Year by the CYO-Troy Youth Association, Inc.

WHEREAS, Since 1775, when the Continental Congress named Benjamin Frank-
lin the first Postmaster General, the United States Postal Service has
served as an important bind which holds our Nation, and its people,
together; and
WHEREAS, The vital work of the employees of the Troy Letter Carriers
Branch 358 supports the growth of commerce, and most importantly,
ensures the free flow of ideas and information which is so essential to
our democracy; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 358, Troy, New York, upon
the occasion of being named the 2014 Person of the Year by the CYO-Troy
Youth Association, Inc. to be celebrated at its 10th Annual William J.
Pascarell Person of the Year Celebration on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at
The Italian Community Center in Troy, New York; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, the National Association of Letter Carriers
Food Drive is the outgrowth of a tradition of community service exhib-
ited repeatedly by members of the Troy Letter Carriers; these carriers
are in every neighborhood throughout our city six days a week, and are
always involved when something has needed to be done, whether collecting
funds for Muscular Dystrophy, watching over the elderly through the
Carrier Alert Program, or rescuing victims of fires, crime, and other
mishaps; and
WHEREAS, For over 22 years, on the second Saturday of May, letter
carriers across the country have collected non-perishable food donations
from their customers, which are delivered directly to local food
pantries in the neighborhoods they are collected from; the Troy Post
Office restocks over a dozen pantries throughout the city every year,
and for some, this one day drive is their biggest donation of the year;
and
WHEREAS, In 2013, over 74 million pounds of food was collected
nationally in one day, and one million collected in the Albany District
alone with over 28 thousand pounds of that total being collected in the
city of Troy; and
WHEREAS, Branch 358, representing Troy and other local city letter
carriers, was one of the top 10 branches nationally for their size
collecting over 320,400 pounds, all being returned to customers in their
own community; and
WHEREAS, The Troy Letter Carriers Branch 358 has also been recognized
nationally for their efforts raising money for The Muscular Dystrophy
Association; for the past nine years, their branch has raised more funds
than any other branch their size in the country, earning them national
appearances on the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon; and
WHEREAS, The Troy Letter Carriers Branch 358 continue to raise even
more funds with satchel drives, golf and bowling tournaments, Valley Cat
nights, and the local favorite, the Troy Pub Crawl; and
WHEREAS, With their connection to every household and business in the
city of Troy, the Troy Letter Carriers Branch 358 truly are a reflection
of the kind of service the people of Troy exemplify when we all work
together for a better community; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long
and sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their

profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 358, Troy, New
York, upon the occasion of being named the 2014 Person of the Year by
the CYO-Troy Youth Association, Inc.; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 358, Troy,
New York.
