LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Mary Nuccio upon the occasion of
celebrating her 100th Birthday

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Mary Nuccio was born on June 24, 1914, in New York City at
the home of her father's sister; her parents had arrived a year earlier
from Italy, and the family settled in Queens; and
WHEREAS, Upon her graduation from Washington Irving High School, Mary
Nuccio attended Plaza Business School and having learned to sew from her
grandmother, she worked in a department store doing alterations; and
WHEREAS, In addition, while attending Business School, Mary Nuccio
volunteered at Goldwater Memorial Hospital on Roosevelt Island, where
she loved caring for the patients; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Mary Nuccio married James Nuccio during the second World War,
and moved with him to Omaha, Nebraska where he was stationed as an
Italian Interpreter for the prisoners of war; during this time she
worked as a seamstress and volunteered at the Army Hospital; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, After the war, Mary Nuccio and her husband moved to Astoria,
Queens, and she worked in the garment district most of her life; she
became very active in St. Francis of Assisi Parish Church, and later
joined Hanac Club in Astoria; and
WHEREAS, Mary Nuccio is the proud mother of two daughters, Joanne and
Marylyn, and two sons-in-law whom she adores; she is the loving grand-
mother to two grandchildren, Janine and Michael, and three great-grand-
daughters, Kerri, Sophia and Camryn; and
WHEREAS, This beloved woman has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Mary Nuccio upon the occasion of her 100th Birthday; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mary Nuccio.
