LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Mayra Avila upon the occasion of
her coronation as Miss Westchester 2014
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, honoring the youth of today, and leaders
of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best exemplify the ideals
and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Mayra
Avila upon the occasion of her coronation as Miss Westchester 2014 on
August 3, 2013; and
WHEREAS, As Miss Westchester 2014, Mayra Avila of Yonkers, New York,
intends to become a leader for education in New York State, speaking
about the importance of education and promoting Westchester County and
Hudson Valley; and
WHEREAS, Born on February 8, 1988, Mayra Avila's family moved to New
York when she was four years old from Ecuador; and
WHEREAS, From 2011 to 2013, Mayra Avila attended Mercy College, earn-
ing a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, a Master of Science
degree in Childhood and Special Education, and a Master of Science
degree in Secondary Math and Special Education; and
WHEREAS, Currently, Mayra Avila is a Mathematics Teacher at Ossining
High School; and
WHEREAS, A strong advocate for educational leadership, Mayra Avila is
the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including the Race to the
Top Scholarship from Mercy College, graduated college cum laude, member
of the Psi Chi National Honor Society, and was on the Dean's list all
quarters she attended; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her year serving as Miss Westchester 2014, Mayra
Avila has been involved in a variety of community events such as Relay
for Life, Breast Cancer Awareness, White Plains and Yonkers St. Patrick
Day Parade, Egg-cellent Easter Egg Hunt in Mamaroneck, Yonkers Summer
Reading for Buddies, and was the guest speaker for the Mercy College
2014 Graduation Ceremony; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Mayra Avila serves as an avid volunteer for Food
Ministries and Habitat for Humanity; and
WHEREAS, Since her crowning, Mayra Avila has become immersed in the
Westchester County community attending charitable events, visiting
schools and hospitals, and speaking to local organizations; and
WHEREAS, This ambitious, sweet, and optimistic young woman strives to
leave behind a legacy of making a positive difference in the lives of
many children and adults in representing both Westchester and the Latino
communities; and
WHEREAS, Through her active involvement in the community and her
sincere dedication to her generation, Mayra Avila is a role model for
her peers; and
WHEREAS, Mayra Avila exemplifies the best potential which is inherent
in our most precious resource, our youth; she has brought enduring honor
to her family and her community through her many achievements; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Mayra Avila upon the occasion of her coronation as Miss
Westchester 2014, and to wish her success in all of her future endeav-
ors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mayra Avila, Miss Westchester 2014.
