LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Steven Schiff, MD, PhD upon the occasion
of his induction into the Liberty Central School District Wall of Fame
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those distinguished citizens who devote their time and ener-
gies to the service of their community and profession, participating in
civic affairs and enhancing the character and quality of life for all
citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Steven Schiff, MD, PhD upon the occasion of his induction into the
Liberty Central School District Wall of Fame to be celebrated at a
breakfast reception in his honor to be held on Saturday, June 28, 2014;
and
WHEREAS, The Wall of Fame was created by the Board of Education as a
way to honor alumni who have made a significant contribution to society
upon graduating from Liberty Central High School; Steven Schiff, MD, PhD
is one such individual; and
WHEREAS, A member of the Class of 1972 at Liberty Central High School,
Steven Schiff, MD, PhD is the director of the Penn State Center for
Neural Engineering, Brush Chair Professor of Engineering, Professor of
Neurosurgery, Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics, and
Professor of Physics at Penn State University; and
WHEREAS, A Pediatric Neurosurgeon, Steven Schiff, MD, PhD's research
interests focus on understanding pathological dynamics in the brain in
terms of the underlying physics, and how technology based on this under-
standing can treat diseases such as epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease,
Parkinson's disease, and chronic pain; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his extraordinary career, Steven Schiff, MD, PhD
holds six patents for devices that help individuals who suffer from
epilepsy and Parkinson's disease, and he is a Fellow of the American
Physical Society, as well as a Fellow of the American College of
Surgeons; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Steven Schiff, MD, PhD is listed in the Guide to
America's Top Physicians, and serves as the Divisional Associate Editor
for Physical Review Letters, and Advisory Editor for the Elsevier Book
Series "Nonlinear Science and Complexity"; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his professional and communi-
ty service, a period of constructive involvement, Steven Schiff, MD, PhD
stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Steven Schiff, MD, PhD displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the wellbeing and vitality of their profession and community,
and have shown a long and sustained commitment to excellence, certainly
have earned the recognition and applause of all citizens of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Steven Schiff, MD, PhD upon the occasion of his induction into the
Liberty Central School District Wall of Fame; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Steven Schiff, MD, PhD.
