LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Terry Fontana upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the United
States Tennis Association Eastern

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize individ-
uals from the sporting world who have distinguished themselves through
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Terry Fontana
upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the Lifetime
Achievement Award by the United States Tennis Association Eastern; this
auspicious occasion was celebrated on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the
Renaissance Westchester Hotel, White Plains, New York; and
WHEREAS, Terry Fontana has given not only of her time and energies but
also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, For over 50 years, Terry Fontana has worked selflessly to
promote the growth of the sport of tennis through her numerous volunteer
roles; and
WHEREAS, Soon after picking up her first racket in 1956, Terry Fontana
quickly developed a love for the sport, as well as a passion for helping
others become better tennis players; some of her early accomplishments
include founding the Matinecock Racquet Club and managing Valley Tennis
of Manhasset; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed woman first became involved with the United
States Tennis Association (USTA) in 1989, joining the Long Island Region
Board upon her return to New York; her many contributions to area tennis
include bringing the sport into the Hicksville School District and
starting the first community tennis association in Long Island; and
WHEREAS, In 1995, Terry Fontana organized the Vitas Gerulaitis Long
Island Championships; through her tireless work, the event has raised
significant funds for college scholarships for deserving junior tennis
players; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of her outstanding volunteer work, Terry
Fontana has been the recipient of such prestigious awards and accolades
as the Hy Zausner Lifetime Achievement Award, the Long Island Volunteer
of the Year Award, and the Vitas Gerulaitis For The Love of Tennis
Award; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Terry Fontana has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which this remarkable woman has displayed
throughout her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Terry Fontana upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the Lifetime Achievement Award by the United States Tennis Association
Eastern; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Terry Fontana.
