LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Edward P. Flanagan, Sr.,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Edward P. Flanagan, Sr. of New Windsor, New York, died on May
20, 2014, at the age of 99; and
WHEREAS, The son of the late John and Nora (Barclay) Flanagan, Edward
P. Flanagan, Sr. was born on November 17, 1914, in Hoboken, New Jersey,
and was a graduate of Haaren High School in 1931; he married Dorothy
"Dot" Donohue on December 1, 1940, in the Bronx; and
WHEREAS, Edward P. Flanagan, Sr. distinguished himself in his profes-
sion and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of his community; and
WHEREAS, Affectionately known to many as "Pop", Edward P. Flanagan,
Sr. was a heavy equipment operator for Local 825 in Middletown, New
York, until his retirement; and
WHEREAS, Edward P. Flanagan, Sr. faithfully and honorably served his
country in the United States Army during the Second World War; he was
stationed overseas and earned the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the European-
African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the
World War II Victory Medal; he was honorably discharged in January of
1946; and
WHEREAS, The true definition of an upstanding citizen, Edward P.
Flanagan, Sr. belonged to and led many organizations in and around New
Windsor; he was a life member and past commander of the VFW Post 4732,
life member and past commander of The American Legion Post 1796, and
life member and past commander of the Disabled American Veterans of New
Windsor; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, he was politically active in New Windsor and
Orange County for many years, and was on the Zoning Board of Appeal of
New Windsor for 5 years; he was also a life member of the Knights of
Columbus, Our Lady of Lourdes Council No. 5890 in Washingtonville, as
well as an usher for many years at Sacred Heart Parish in Newburgh; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his parents and his wife, Edward P. Flanagan,
Sr. was predeceased by his siblings: Peter, Vincent and John Flanagan,
Mary Miller, Catherine Hansen, Dot Brady and Frances Flanagan; he is
survived by his loving children, Edward (Jane) and Marian (Tom); his
grandchildren, Wayne (Lauren), Ed (Amy), Michelle and Susan; his great-
grandchildren, Taylor, Lainey, Nikki and Jennifer, as well as several
nieces, nephews, and cousins; and
WHEREAS, Edward P. Flanagan, Sr.'s commitment to excellence, and his
spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, includ-
ing charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Edward P. Flanagan, Sr.
leaves behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and
will remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Edward P. Flanagan, Sr., distinguished citizen and
devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Edward P. Flanagan, Sr.
