LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Hempstead Bay Power Squadron upon
the occasion of hosting its 2014-2015 Change of Watch Installation Cere-
mony on May 1, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge organizations of remarkable integrity and character
whose endeavors have enhanced the complexion of the majestic Empire
State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Hempstead Bay Power Squadron upon the occasion of hosting its 2014-
2015 Change of Watch Installation Ceremony on Thursday, May 1, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Organized in 1914, the United States Power Squadron is a
nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to making boating safer
and more enjoyable by teaching classes in seamanship, navigation, and
related subjects; its members are boating families who contribute to
their communities by promoting safe boating through education; and
WHEREAS, The United States Power Squadron has nearly 40,000 members
organized into over 400 squadrons across the country, and in some United
States territories; it is America's largest non-profit boating organiza-
tion and has been honored by three United States presidents for its
civic contributions; the Hempstead Bay Power Squadron is one such squa-
dron; and
WHEREAS, The Hempstead Bay Power Squadron's activities involve the
three primary objectives of the United States Power Squadron including
community service, continuing education, and enjoying the friendship and
camaraderie of its fellow members; and
WHEREAS, The community and civic services that the Hempstead Bay Power
Squadron offers include boating safety courses on a regular basis to
boaters in their community, which are open to the public; successfully
completing a United States Power Squadron boating safety course meets
the educational requirements for boat operation in all states; in addi-
tion, in a cooperative program with the United States Coast Guard Auxil-
iary, squadron members conduct courtesy Vessel Safety Checks of boats at
the request of their owners; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the Hempstead Bay Power Squadron members help
the National Ocean Service keep its nautical charts accurate by report-
ing chart corrections, and participate in many other community improve-
ment projects; and
WHEREAS, The Hempstead Bay Power Squadron offers many carefully
planned courses in subjects such as Seamanship, Piloting, Plotting and
Position Finding, Celestial Navigation, Cruise Planning, Engine Mainte-
nance, Marine Electronics, Sailing, and much more; these courses are
taught by experienced member instructors, and members who complete them
are recognized; and
WHEREAS, Participating both on-the-water and off with fellow members
who are skilled in boating is a rewarding and enjoyable experience;
on-the-water activities include cruises, rendezvous, sail races, naviga-
tion contests and even fishing derbies; activities ashore include meet-
ings with marine programs, parties, dinner-dances, picnics and field
trips; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Hempstead Bay Power Squadron upon the occasion of hosting

its 2014-2015 Change of Watch Installation Ceremony on May 1, 2014; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Hempstead Bay Power Squadron.
