LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Beacon Hotel of Oswego, New York,
upon the occasion of its designation as recipient of the 2014 Small
Business Excellence Award by the United States Small Business Adminis-
tration and the New York Business Development Corporation
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize those
exceptional individuals and businesses which substantially contribute to
the economic vitality of their communities and the entire Empire State;
and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the Beacon
Hotel of Oswego, New York, upon the occasion of its designation as
recipient of the 2014 Small Business Excellence Award by the United
States Small Business Administration and the New York Business Develop-
ment Corporation; this auspicious occasion was celebrated at the 16th
Annual Excellence Awards Luncheon at the Doubletree Hotel, in Syracuse,
New York, on Monday, May 5, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The Small Business Excellence Awards recognizes the impor-
tance of small businesses to our economy, and celebrates local upstate
New York companies as part of National Small Business Week; the event is
hosted by the United States Small Business Administration and the New
York Business Development Corporation, along with area lenders and
economic development organizations; and
WHEREAS, Small businesses are selected for the Excellence Awards based
on their company's longevity, innovation, sales growth, increased
employment, ability to overcome adversity and community contributions;
and
WHEREAS, Nominated for this prestigious award by Pathfinder Bank, the
Beacon Hotel was founded by local entrepreneurs and real estate inves-
tors, Atom and Falecia Avery in 2011; the two used their years of expe-
rience to complete an extensive building renovation, and created a beau-
tiful boutique hotel in Oswego's Historic Franklin Square District; and
WHEREAS, Since opening, the Beacon Hotel has become a centerpiece of
community life, and a valued member of the local business community; it
features all the amenities of a major hotel franchise, but is small
enough for its staff to pay attention to the finest of details; and
WHEREAS, The Beacon Hotel's outstanding facilities pay tribute to the
rich history of the Oswego area, while offering its patrons a comforta-
ble and enjoyable atmosphere in which to enjoy their lodging experience;
and
WHEREAS, Owners Atom and Falecia Avery have contributed their time and
energies to the community; Atom serves on the Board of Directors of the
Oswego County Federal Credit Union, is a member of the Oswego County
Airport Advisory Board, and was recently asked to serve on the Oswego
Health Board of Directors; he and Falecia have also raised significant
funds for Oswego County Habitat for Humanity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
express its highest admiration for the Beacon Hotel, and to wish it
continued success in all future endeavors; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Beacon Hotel of Oswego, New York, upon the occasion of its
designation as recipient of the 2014 Small Business Excellence Award;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Atom and Falecia Avery, owners of the Beacon Hotel.
