LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Karen Bell upon the occasion of her
designation as the recipient of a 2014 SUNY Chancellor's Award for
Excellence in Professional Service

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and character
whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing tradition, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Karen Bell, Associate Dean in the School of Education, upon the occasion
of her designation as the recipient of a 2014 SUNY Chancellor's Award
for Excellence in Professional Service, to be celebrated at SUNY New
Paltz's first faculty meeting, and the first classified staff gathering
in the fall of 2014; and
WHEREAS, Faculty and staff who receive the Chancellor's Award for
Excellence have served their students, fellow faculty and staff, campus-
es, and communities with the utmost distinction, and have demonstrated
extraordinary dedication and service to SUNY New Paltz; Dr. Karen Bell
is one such individual; and
WHEREAS, In 2003, Dr. Karen Bell was appointed Associate Dean of the
School of Education; at that time, she worked closely with the National
Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education to guide Education facul-
ty and staff through the lengthy and complex accreditation process; and
WHEREAS, Central to that effort was the Coordinating Council on
Assessment, which Dr. Karen Bell established soon after her appointment
and through which she led the effort to develop, and subsequently imple-
ment, the assessments related to the National Council for Accreditation
of Teacher Education; and
WHEREAS, In 2010, Dr. Karen Bell served as interim dean of SUNY New
Paltz; among the programs that benefited from her leadership and support
were those in the Department of Education Administration, which she has
chaired since fall 2012; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Dr. Karen Bell was recruited as a regional lead-
er of the SUNY Teacher Education Network, the group charged with plan-
ning and designing professional development geared specifically toward
the needs of college and university faculty in four key areas of educa-
tion reform: teacher performance assessment, data-driven instruction,
Common Core standards, and clinically rich practices; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Karen Bell was responsible for communicating
the SUNY Teacher Education Network progress at the campus level, through
her concurrent management of the local Campus Teacher Education Network;
and
WHEREAS, Through her work on these committees, Dr. Karen Bell's impact
on faculty professional development has been positive and far reaching;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of individuals such as Dr. Karen Bell, who, by providing their
skills and talents to our schools, work to support our proud tradition
of public education; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Karen Bell has clearly had an enduring impact on the
youth of SUNY New Paltz, as well as on the community-at-large, and
accordingly merits recognition and applause for her impressive dedi-
cation to others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Karen Bell upon the occasion of her designation as the recipi-

ent of a 2014 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional
Service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Karen Bell.
